I have not yet found a way. Each time I give it up, it pulls me back in. Finding a balance is our only hope.

Drinking alcohol turns my chess game to shit.  Even after one beer the thought of playing a game and making some infuriating blunder keeps me from playing.  The earlier I start drinking, the sooner I stop playing. So my advice is to drink, early and often.

Absolutely agreed

Two people who have never met me and would not recognize me somehow have definitive insight into my motives?

Read "All the Wrong Moves".  It is an entertaining story about a guy and his chess addiction.

If you're already caught, there's no hope. Even if you do manage to quit, one chess game, even one chess problem, will ensnare you again.
