Is there such thing as "luck" in chess?

A blunder is objectively a blunder, whether taken advantage of or not.  No follow up required.

True but it is no use if you dont outplay your opponent. Why nit pick an irrelevant sentence to the point that was made?

Because if you were wrong about this, you might also be wrong about other positions you hold and examine them again?

Just misspoke, its not a position that I hold. I don't think its that deep.

Fair enough.

You just can't let go and you lost every argument we ever had, and now you're telling me things people said to me are false. If you know, how do you know what Coolout said to me? Can you answer that? It would be interesting. Also are you on medication? Does it have side effects? Because you always become aggressive about this time of day.

Lol.  Confirmation bias much?  You need to stop trying to divine every detail about me you can imagine.  Demonstrate this time of day phenom, or move along.  No medication...not that it would be any of your business, regardless wink.png.

I don't know what Coolout said to you, but I do know what he said to everyone publicly, and know exactly how you tend to misinterpret and embellish things in your favor, ala the silly claims in this post.

I've seen a big deterioration in your mental ability and so have others. You should not be accusing others of falsehoods and being wrong all the time. You make some quite good comments but your contentious opinions are totally off the wall. In fact, they're worse than that. Chaotic, inconsistent .... and you dare pretend that others get things wrong all the time.

I would not rely on your perceptions if I were you, nor the perceptions of those who gossip in PMs with you.  You've got a chip on your shoulder the size of a surfboard; theirs aren't much smaller.

What you have noticed is not a change in my mental abilities, it's a reaction to something else...but I'm not surprised you aren't picking up on what's actually changing in the forums over time.

It doesn't matter about chance or not. What matters is that you missed a calculation because you did not thoroughly think it out, meaning that you weren't unlucky, but you were just dumb.

No that's not a correct analysis. You might not have time to think it out or it may be beyond your capabilities.

Of course it will be beyond your capabilities if you are not smart enough to make a correct move. That's not unlucky. That's called being dumb. Same as being low on time. You just aren't capable enough to think out everything. That's not unlucky, that's also being dumb.

Since I havent seen you here before but you seem confident, I wanna hear your analysis of this simple practical situation in chess, without going too much in detail.

You miscalculate a line (show lack of skill), but still play the best move in the position. You cant say that your skill delivered the best possible outcome, then what was it? Was there chance involved perhaps?

No, that's not luck. You simply thought it was the correct move to make. That was your calculation.

Because of what luck is, and what chess is, and what people are, there has to be at least some luck in chess. So to me it makes more sense to discuss how much, rather than if it's there.

I say between 5 and 10 percent.

Ah. Thanks. Is that how many of the move choices depend on luck or how much the result depends on luck? I say the worse we can play the more of our moves depend on luck, but the better we play, the more decisive is luck.

What is the other 90-95%?

I say it is love, memory, openess, patience, curiosity, laughter, exchange, real virtuality, quickness and death.

I can't disagree with that.

Nononono, you pretend I have a chip on my shoulder but I'm completely impartial. If at any time you can act like a person who isn't a psychopath then I'll take you as I find you, at that point. You're a troll. Most know it already. Some don't.

I think that there are less intelligent younger users, say in their 20s to 40s and the older ones, including yourself, are becoming less and less mentally flexible and even more intolerant and self-orientated. There are less topics on chess and more probably made by kids, on boring topics.

You floated the question and that's the result of five seconds' thought or less so don't expect it to be perfect.

I didn't actually float a question.  Read again.  You just saw on opportunity to pontificate about younger people lacking interest and older people being inflexible...i.e. everyone but you has got problems.  But you don't have a chip on your shoulder wink.png...

Your main problem is that you think you're in control. Of everything. Your second problem is that you only circulate near those who are easily taken in by a very thin veneer of humanity. Most people think you're pathetic and I dislike you because you're very dishonest and highly manipulative.

No doubt you will insist on the last word, as usual.

Do you imagine that this tactic of tossing a fresh insult and then immediately pretending I am going on and on about it, then entreating me to not respond, will work?

You don't know most people, as it turns out.  So, you're a remarkably poor source of information about how people feel about me.  Posters here know how *you* feel about me, and you project this to everyone else...according to you I am:

an idiot

an imbecile

a fool

pathetic

a psychopath

dishonest

manipulative

a troll

I could dig up another couple dozen insults, but that pretty much covers this month.  But again...no chip on your shoulder, you are completely impartial.  You "take me as you find me" and would never keep throwing bile and bitterness when being treated civilly.  Plain for everyone to see...

That is only about American English. It pretends to refer to British English but is a sales tool for American English and is best ignored. Do you know why you posted it?

The words you listed are not insults. None of them are being used as an insult.

I think the graphs say otherwise.

"The words you listed are not insults. None of them are being used as an insult."

Even in your Opti-centric universe, they are insults.  Whether you believe them to be "reality" or not.  Take a poll wink.png.

In my opinion, I now think it's best to keep well clear of anyone who has you on their friends' list or who even interacts with you. You should be shunned, so I'm changing my behaviour from now on, to that effect.

I think I'm just going to keep answering you because there are some people who seem a bit slow in recognising that you're trolling. Most people aren't taken in by you but, unfortunately a few are. A bit silly of them, perhaps. Let them learn.

You made it a whole 4 hours this time (during which I didn't even keep posting, I might add).  I guess you are getting better...relatively speaking.

If eventually their brains finally click into gear, then they will join the majority who know just what you are and they'll get fed up of you. Because I know you're trolling. You probably don't because you're one of those people who can't help it. I have a life and perhaps you don't. What do you think? And honestly, I wasn't insulting you. You only interpret them as insults but they weren't. You may even end up killing off the entire forums, by yourself.

The ultimate argument has been invoked.  After 4 hours of pondering, walking the hills and weighing the wisdom of 7 decades, you convince yourself to jump back into the fray...you wind up the pitch and throw it...you have a life, and I...well, I just don't wink.png

What will I do?  Truly, your criticism is cutting.

And I see you both are insolent speakers.

They do quaint deeds and fully flaunt their pride.
It is the world's one crime its babes grow dull,
Its poor are ox-like, limp and leaden-eyed.
Not that they starve; but starve so dreamlessly,
Not that they sow, but that they seldom reap,
Not that they serve, but have no gods to serve,
Not that they die, but that they die like sheep.

Opti's been trolling these forums for almost a decade now.  He just won't admit that insulting and condescending to posters right and left is actually trolling.  He's been muted numerous times over the years for this behavior, but he goes away for a while and comes back, and has never been banned (that I know of, anyway).

That's not an insult, mind you...just an observation.
