Is there such thing as "luck" in chess?

I say some luck does exist in chess but I think that chess limits the luck factor more than most other games, if not all of them. I dont like games with a large luck factor involved , which is why I tend not to play games involving dice .

I wouldn't waste any more time planning anything. I've planned a lot over the years and it usually comes to nothing. But you end up somewhere. You just wouldn't think you'd end up at that place when you started out.

As for skill and luck and planning in chess, you can stumble unconsciously into a good position if you don't know what to do and guess at a move, but if anything works in chess and you "luck out" it is only because your opponent didn't capitalize on the openings you left.

Luckily, those things happen to me sometimes...

Luck can be an important factor in moments of high pressure and in sharp positions players can get too excited or too nervous.

"Luck be a lady tonight....."  I fondly remember that old Sinatra song;  Your question caused me to think of that great" old school"  song.  Perhaps I digress here...Just thinking outloud...

any imperfect move is luck. the best move is not luck.

If the imperfect moves works...

I guess if it doesn't you could call the misfortune of it not working, bad luck if you were guessing...

it works, but there is still a weakness hidden in any imperfect moves.sooner or later,it will become a butterfly effect.

Trust me I am quite familiar. I tend to draw with better players.

DrSpudnik

I draw with butterflies!

Conquistador

I just draw butterflies.

best moves leads to more possible better moves...better moves lead to less better moves...you can not make more mistakes if you intent to draw.

When I play better opponents, they play better moves, which in turn helps me to see the better counters. Thus, I end up making better moves myself when we both play a game from more sound theory, I find I am more likely to draw. When I play worse opponents and we get into a match of bad moves in unsound theory, I tend to either win or lose. It seems the matching bests are gone and the scale's balance has usually been tipped in favor of someone, irrevocably.

BTW, I find sometimes I get lucky and pick the best move, even though I didn't know for sure it was the best.

Does nobody else draw butterflies?

Don't judge me too harshly.

I prefer to watch them fly instead. They are so much more lively than any drawing I could muster.

Butterflies are reminding me of some famous piece of music, but I am at a loss as to what that is.

I love the song Angel by Hendrix...

he says...

Well she's walking through the clouds
With a circus mind that's running round
Butterflies and zebras
And moonbeams and fairy tales
That's all she ever thinks about
Riding with the wind.

I was thinking of something more along the lines of Classical or Jazz.  I don't really listen to rock too much anymore.  So Classical (or jazz) relating to butterflies.

SPARTANEMESIS

It was an English bloke piloting the Tardis, right?

Winnersp, are you suggesting that it's better to deal with the adversary in their comfort zones?  At least for those of us who don't have best move logic, that is?

And for those who say: "It is fate," my response is the choices you make determine your fate; if you're lucky you'll make the right choices.

nameno1had

yeah, your right.... I thought it was angel, then went to look up lyrics, realizing it was little wing, I copied and pasted, but I forgot to change the first part of my post.

I listened to Classical before it was cool.

You want to compare Rock and Classical?  Well lets be honest, its no comparison.  We need something better to compare, lets say Rock vs a band of clapping monkeys, trash can drummers, and cats with banjos.

Between those two, it is obvious the band with cats playing banjos are better.
