Is this strategy really unbeatable?

Guys this is my first post so I can call myself a forum newbie Laughing But I'm sure not newbie when it comes to the game. I've been playing for over 20 years now and I developed a few excellent strategies that make winning against almost anyone ridiculously easy.

I'd like to discuss one of these strategies now. I call it "The Pawn Wall". You basically move the pawns into a V formation so they all cover each other, plus the rooks, the king and the queen offer direct protection to certain pawns. Then you attack your opponent by moving the line forward. As you create space between your pawns and the other pieces, you move the knights and the king forward, as well as the bishops if necessary. Unless the opponent manages to do something that forces you to modify your strategy, you should leave your other pieces in place.

As the pawn wall creates a death trap for your opponents, he's forced to attack the pawns. When you start to lose the pawns, you engage the opponent's pieces with the knights and the king, while performing hit-and-run attacks with the rest of your pieces. You may take some losses, just watch out for the king. Once you clear the board of most opponent's pieces, you swarm him/her with your remaining forces until they have nowhere to go.

I mostly play against guys with at least 10 years of experience, often more, and my win ratio with this strategy is around 95%. I'd like to know if anyone else uses something similar and if there's any effective defense against it. I don't wanna be taken by surprise Wink Looks like you won't have an easy task as over a dozen chess experts I know couldn't do much against the mighty Pawn Wall!

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's the strategy Anand would employ if he was talented enough.

The Pawn Wall is to winning what the Berlin Wall is to drawing.

Either a troll or clueless.

You should just challenge a few of the half-decent players on this forum, and see how well your Pawn Wall works out.

Enter into an OTB tournament and employ your strategy and see how well you do. That will tell you what you need to know. Be sure to enter into the "Open" section. If you win a single game we'd all congratulate you.

I'm pretty sure you're friends with 10 years of experience are not experts in the sense of having attained the requisite rating to be called that.

Owlmoon

If you almost always win, why are you unrated!?

I am not sure, but isn't that exactly the kind of setup Bobby Fischer was going for in all of his white games against Spassky? You can bet it was quite a struggle for him to then hold off the pawn wall when Spassky himself used it in Fischer's black games.

The V-like structure you are talking about is sometimes also called the Indian Refrigerator Attack (IRA) because the pawns resemble the star constellation of the Refrigerator.

You can't lose if you don't play.

TheGrobe

Nor can you win.

Scottrf

It's still an unbeatable strategy, nobody said it had to win.

Dude_3

lol- no offense, but your sure you didn't beat people with 10 years of experience in CHECKERS?

This is just stupid. Its got to be a joke right? My 8 year old cousin is smarter than this.  Wow, some people are so wierd.

chapablanca2000

You gotta admit, clearing the board of most of your opponent's pieces, and then swarming the board with yours sounds pretty effective.

Although advancing the king with all the pieces still on the board is an advanced concept which I cannot yet grasp.

iksarol

a clueless troll who just made a new account.

I'm a pawn wall enthusiast myself, and once played against chess.com writer GM Gregory Serper in a friendly game (he was running a chess camp in Wisconsin where I go to school). I had spent weeks on the pawn wall theory, and when I finally played him, I unveiled it. We both manifested extremely formidable pawn walls pushed up against each other and once we both had positioned our rooks correctly he looked up at me smiled, and offered a draw. He said, "Son I've seen a hell of a lot of players in my day having been to the Botvinnik school of chess, but I haven't seen a pawn wall like that since Korchnoi was in his prime." He shook my hand and we've been good friends ever since.

So to answer the OP, coming from the GM Serper, yes the pawn wall is unbeatable--but only when played to perfection. Many people slave themselves to a move order instead of understanding the principles of pawn wall play, like the first poster does.

Yeah you do have to play it to perfection, but if the opponent decides to attack earlier and take out some of your pawns, then you need to think smart and move some of your other units so they take out the attacking pieces and close the gaps in the wall.

For those who asked me to play against some people online, I'm sry but I can't do that. Every time I try to start a game, I get some error messages. My PC is quite old and messed up so I never play online, only regular chess. And those people I played definitely weren't checkers masters Tongue Out

I didn't read the original post and the answer is no.
