Stalemate is just as meaningless.
When you play 50 games a day who cares?
If you lose on time, it's only your problem. Time is also an important resource in chess, not less important than the position itself. This makes this game more flexible strategically, because while planning what you're about to play, you must also include your time situation
Unless you lose because of server lag. I lost multiple games in row on time and I couldn't believe it, I am not playing slow at all. Then I click a rematch (1 min bullet) and I join the game having 42 seconds only out of a minute.......
Why would anyone care if a winning position is lost on time.
Time is only a thing for me because some people would stop playing when down.
It can be a nice excuse to claim to "just" have lost on time. That's why many players play too slow against stronger players because it feels better to lose on time than to be crushed on the board.
If you don't like playing with the clock at all you could use an increment or slow time control.

Define chess. Can you play chess without a clock running?

Just think how long that game would be if there were no time limit.
