Lots of pawns Vs minor pieces

As you approach an end-game where you have traded your minor pieces for the opponents pawns (i.e. you have 8 pawns and 2 rooks, they have a knight, a bishop, 2 pawns and 2 rooks) how should you play?
I always just seem to end up losing a pawn here and there, I don't know how to use them together. Any general tips welcome!
