@Scarlet_Evans loll wild guess

@Nghstalker what you said about oxygen confirmed what I was thinking of possible reasons? lolll

If we ever play otb at a tourney,  I will remember to wear squeaky shoes, to fidget, creak my chair, crack my knuckles, and take deep breaths and sighs.  And lastly look at a watch and the clock as u play and think...  lol

I know you're just making a joke, but if you did that to me, I'd calmly stop the clock, summon the TD, and ask him to keep you quiet. He has the authority to enforce that behavior.

this is probably a rude response so i apologize but maybe its cause of weight? most chess players who are weighted seem to breathe heavily like a hamster and i dont mean this in a bad way but just in general from looking at it time to time so yeah maybe its cause hamsters?

Kowarenai

Yeah I have seen that too, cute hamsters

Obesity could definitely contribute to this.  But i also have a friend when playing OTB chess he tends to exhale louder than normal.  He does the pregnant woman exhale that takes lamaze classes.

Lollll I played against normal weighted people and I didn't see anyone obese there so...this conversation is getting uncontrollably funnny.

Really? That's strange - There are obese kids everywhere these days. I hope they weren't keeping the obese kids from coming into the tournament hall...

I was in a live tournament my yesterday. My first time experience was okay. But I guess I had a question why people tend to breathe reallly heavily during the game? Do people gasp for more air when they think? Do they feel better that way?? Also I don’t understand why some seem so annoyed when I took my time thinking….

Was it a scholastic tournament?  Or adult?

Long thinks happen in chess.  My longest ever is 54 minutes.  I had one more recently, like 2016 or 2017, where I thought 37 minutes to play the passive and prophylactic move Bc1-d2.

I drew the game with the 54 minute think and won the one with the 37 minute think.

I have had numerous thinks in the 20s (minutes, not seconds).

If you are a scholastic player, I face so many kids that I swear have ADHD as they cannot sit still and are always grunting if you take more than a minute to move.

In fact, against kids, I have sometimes, if the position is simplified enough, intentionally dragged out a move against kids.  Knowing that I am going to play 34...Rc4 with 53 minutes on the clock, I'll figure out subsequent moves beyond the depth I have figured out already just to drive the opponent bonkers.  I spend an extra 9 minutes and they often blunder out of boredom!

That's why I ask the age of your opponents.

@B1ZMARK it was the latter lollll. I am very sensitive to noises. And for one moment all I could hear is extremely loud exhalation from all directions. Lolll and people were wearing masks too. Maybe that’s why they lacked more oxygen??

Nah it's normal then. After a long thought I tend to exhale deeply as well.

I don/t think they would such a thing.....It is interesting that before you said this I always think that kids that like to play chess are skinny because brain uses up a lot of energy and when you are absorbed by chess you forget to eat lolll Also nowadays people eat better than before right?

Not only is adult obesity exploding, but childhood obesity is exploding, too. People have more food to eat these days, but unfortunately it's garbage fast food that's highly processed.

Wow, thanks for taking the time to write such a long post... I am impressed that you could keep thinking for that long----very impressive concentration power. Well, my opponents are adults. Two are in high schools lol. They breathed the loudest lol.

I have gained quite a good understanding now. Thank everyone for answering my confusion!!

I think I've heard of this gambit. Doesn't it often transpose into a delayed Bongcloud?

Nope, but I've seen it transpose to the Dutch Defense: Fianchetto, Classical, Buenos Aires Variation and the Queen's Pawn Opening: Mikėnas, Montevideo, Zaire Defense.

Maybe they just had COVID and couldn't breathe normally

That would be my first assumption too. Other things cause abnormal breathing but covid seems to be one of the more common reasons these days.

Yes, those were the only openings I could find with "air" in them.

mpaetz

You don't usually sit three feet from someone in a very quiet environment for hours at a stretch so it's likely that your opponents' breathing seemed louder than it actually was. Also, it is harder to breathe through these inconvenient masks.

sqayum

They are called mouth breathers. Natural selection will wipe them out soon enough. We could it ourselves too! :D

technical_knockout

some people have a hard time breathing.
