Lowest-rated GM

Can anyone find a GM with a lower rating than Arthur Bisguier?  His USCF rating is 2200, and his FIDE rating is 2174, yet he somehow got his GM norm and has a life master certificate as well... o_O

Bajecny

Actually he is the lowest rated GM in the world according to the FIDE. Second trying to catch him would be Suradiradja from indonesia, with a rating of 2215 but losing 17 points in the next list.

Good post Micky.

No, I think this guy is the lowest rated GM:

I agree with Micky but will take it farther.  "yet he somehow got his GM norm" is an extremely ignorant and unkind statement.  Bisguier is a great American chess player - very strong when he was younger with the notable victories pointed out by Micky (if you don't recognize names like Larsen and Petrosian on that list, you should Wiki them).

More than that, Bisguier has always been involved in chess outreach.  I have seen many of his lectures to scholastic chess groups when I was growing up (I know - they must not have helped too much).  Besides being very talented, he is kind and generous and quite undeserving of "yet he somehow got his GM norm".  My wish for everyone on chess.com is that they are still enjoying chess when they are 85 years old and that nobody thinks they are undeserving of accolades earned when they were younger.

There are so many GMs and IMs that stop playing tournaments by the age of 50 or so, and call themselves "retired". I imagine that this is often ego-driven rating preservation. It is great to see that GM Bisguier still enjoys playing.

I am going to guess his rating dropped before the USCF instituted floors.

dashkee94

The rating floor doesn't artificially compensate for losing games; it only segregates players to their proper class and discourages deliberate losing of rating points (sandbagging).  He has the lifetime title of GrandMaster, he earned the USCF Life Master title, and he keeps playing chess though way past his prime.  If he continues to play against opponents who beat him, his rating will decrease and he will still have the title of GM.  He will never lose that title.  And his rating could continue to decrease.

I had the good fortune of playing Bisguier, and he complimented my play too. Laughing

Lowest rated GM is Bisguier Arthur with 2179 points.

What is more interesting to me is lowest rated IM who have only 1852 points and he is IM Elfert, Aleksandr V

As explained above, Arthur Bisguier will be 85 years old in October. He won his GM title in 1957. Unlike most GMs, Bisguier has remained active into his 80's. His rating has been going down continuously since he was in his mid 60's, but he doesn't care about ratings, he likes to play chess. A guy who has tournament wins over Larsen, Petrosian, Reshevsky, Gligoric, and Fischer doesn't worry to much about ratings!

And that is exactly why he is my favorite chess player. Almost all others, IMs included, "retire" from tournament chess at some point. It seems that their ego is greater their the love of the game.

Zigwurst

1852 rated IM?! Wow!

I believe that FIDE doesn't utilise rating floors (correct me if I'm wrong.) Only USCF has rating floors.

Pat_Zerr

I hope I still enjoy playing chess in my 80's.

How is he a IM if he never crossed over 2400 not 2300 for that matter

I would suggest reading up on Mr. Bisguier, instead of ignorantly trashing a piece of living chess history.  Consider yourself very fortunate, blessed, and lucky, if you still have a passion for something in your 80's

I would also like to add, that is is refreshing to see someone that plays the game simply because they love it, and not for the "rating".

matthew_b_rook

a 1360 FM ?????????????????????

matthew_b_rook

the highest FM is higher than the highest IM???

Zigwurst

There are FM's that are lower than 2150, if I remember correctly.

matthew_b_rook

Pendyala, Ritvik is rated 1360 and is an FM
