This whole match was an embarrassment to be fair

your life is an embarrasment if you think that all draws are boring. You are just one of those people who looks at the result and only views the game if it was desicive.

Bull manure...

It's silly to fault a chess champion for being strategic, IMHO.

The thing I don't get...Everyone saying magnus made a "good" decision.  He will crush him in the rapid...The rapid is 4 games starting from an equal position(which he could get if he pressed for a small time in the last game and couldn't convert anyway.  Capuana had no counterplay and no way to win unless magnus blundered.).  Its factually a TERRIBLE decision to not play on in game 12 if you can't lose.  Which I looking at that position believe I wouldn't lose against fab as blunderfvl as I am.  Just such a horrific decision

shellman211

Sour grapes from all you guys who could never play at his level.

Hahahahahaha

Carlsen will be WC at the end of this day. And hopefully quit. Or take a long time out of chess. That would be better for him. Thnx, Magnus.

Staples, I have a question about this: Do you hate Carlsen purely because he drew in a won position, or just because he is a piece of s**t

It's just goest to show that the current format is suboptimal. Remember the quick draw in game 12 against Karjakin in the 2016 WC match?

Can you imagine Fischer or Kasparov offering a draw in that position?

Kasparov himself said he could imagine that.  Carlsen is having trouble with the pressure.   Caruana gave him a harder match than he expected and he has lost his confidence.  Carlsen may (in Kasparov's opinion) be underestimating how stressful the fast game for the title are.

Anyway, the fact that we made it to tiebreaks would make the game more interesting so...

It is certainly disheartening and borderline humiliating for chess fans, and probably for chess as a sport. But, from the Carlsen's point of view its just and even appealing. I mean think about it, he has everything to lose (his title, fanfare) if something goes wrong. And Caruana has everything to gain, so Magnus is in more pressure here, and has been out prepared for most of the match. His approach was to make sure he doesnt lose with black and then win in shorter time format where statistically stands way ahead of Caruana .......

Carlsen is certainly one of the greats. Not everyone has the same level of dedication or killer instincts as Fischer. I can understand why he didn't go for the win and it doesn't diminish his credibility by any means. Although it does change the way people will view him.

I feel modern players simply lack the drive to play for the win. Fischer would've gone hardcore as black and Tal probably would've laughed at the idea of a draw in that position. But then again there is a reason why they are revered more than other players.

Also they need to get rid of speed chess. That's a joke. WC should be decided over classical tc only. Period.

Before the match I considered Carlsen a clear favourite in case the match went to tie-breaks, but now I see this as 50:50. At best. Caruana has had zero problems in the opening, often staying ahead of Carlsen on the clock, while Carlsen has appeared a little bit uncertain. My prediction is that we will see a new World Champion today.

Bereket000

if u think caruana will win keep on dreaming ..he barely survived the classical he has no chance in rapid and blitz

Magnus Carlsen is an absolute joke. The man has absolutely no heart whatsoever.

Tie score going into the final game of the World Chess Championship and he gets a big advantage and instead of trying to convert it offers a draw. Where’s the competitive drive? Where’s the belief in himself? Can you imagine Fischer or Kasparov offering a draw in that position?

Just disgusting behavior by a reigning world champion. No respect for competition whatsoever. I hope Caruana destroys him in the tiebreak. It would serve him right.

I have given my thoughts, and  now it’s your turn chess.com. Was this the most disgusting behavior by a reigning champion in world chess championship history?

What he did just reflects is strength. A player has during a game to decide if he should take risks or not in several positions. If he is playing for a win, he will take more risks, if he can win a tournament with a draw he will take less risks. This applies not only to the moves played in a game, but to choice of openings.

This kind of considerations are typical for strong players and difficult to understand for people who are losing material in most games. He is playing to win, and this means in this situation to draw the last game before going to the tie-break where he thinks he has better chances. Simple and logic. And strong.

They cannot play for years, they have to come to a decision. And both players can play rapid and blitz, so no problem about this. And for the public rapid and blitz is more interesting, no doubt about this.

Well, I think the world champions appearance sort of tells he is not enjoying this current match very much. What can one say? Chess isn't always that fun.

StinkingHyena

It needs to be a swiss every 4 years. Think about it, top 8 in the world, 4 games each round, thats still a total of 12 games for the winner and it has the benefit of forcing players to push and play exciting chess.

HolographWars

No inspiration from Carlsen’s games these days. I get it from romantic 19 century games and from Tal. Although chess is still great quality, verystale games compared to then.
