Magnus Carlsen-Wikipedia

Sort:

If you go to Wikipedia you will see that Magnus Carlsen has the top story of
the "In the news" section.  I believe he is also getting some major magazine
article coverage as well.
This is the most positive coverage chess has received in years, and proves that
the world loves a prodigy.
I still think that as long as Anand is World Champion he deserves the most respect, but this year the matches between Anand, Carlsen, and Topalov should
make for some great chess.

Is Magnus playing any of them?! Smile

KillTacular

I was just looking Magnus Carlsen up on wikipedia a little while ago myself. I was interested in learning a bit more about him because we are the same age (I'm older by about a month). Our chess ratings, on the other hand, are very far apart!

dpruess

yeah, Magnus has generated very positive news for chess.

mcfischer

yeah, I was surprised to see him in time magazine, although I thought the article could have been better

Tricklev

Oh god, not another stupid troll who rants on about Magnus Carlsens intelligence without having a clue.

Ps: Making assumptions on emotional reactions to someones age (or whatever makes you boohoo) isn´t exactly the definition for intelligence.

You must be joking. To have a 19 year old kid who isn't fit and definitely isn't very smart as world champion?!? He's more like an embarrassment.

Nonetheless I'm glad he exists as he shows just how useless and what meaningless nonsense chess really is.

I was going to comment on your ridiculous post, but I refuse to type, uhohspaghettio.

I don't get the Magnus hype. He's certainly a great player, unfortunately he has zero charisma (he is after all scandinavian).

Putting aside the totally absurd scandinavian jibe, who gives a hoot about charisma when you're a maestro on the board?

Perhaps you'd like to comment on how North Koreans are more interesting than Scandinavians then? :)

yea what is all this hype about!? he is ONLY the third youngest grandmaster in history... he is ONLY the fith person to pass the 2800 mark... he's ONLY 19... he's ONLY rated higher than the current world champion... he's ONLY the student of aruguably the greatest player of all time... he's ONLY the youngest blitz champion of all time... he only had a 3002 preformance rating at the Nanjing Pearl Spring tournament, and finished 2.5 points ahead of the worlds 2nd highest rated player... i mean come on WHAT IS ALL THE HYPE ABOUT!!!! i really just dont understand why anyone would care about this obscure Scandinavian chess prodigy... i wish people would just quit saying how good he is it makes me feel inferior as a player, as a man, as a grown-up and as a person...

There is a saying, "It takes a jeweller to appraise the right price for a jewel" - a seller of grocery won't be able to assess the proper value of a jewel. Those who think that Carlsen lacks intelligence, charisma, etc. have dubious levels of both.

I see absolutely no possibility of flaw in your argument or logic. You might as well have ended with a solid Q.E.D.

dsmeaton

oh jeez ...

what's retarded is the opinions of carlsen away from the chess board. who gives a shit what he looks like, whether he exercises and what his particular proclivities are!

is he an outstanding chess player? yes ... end of argument.

this is a chess forum, for the appreciation of chess. carlsen brings more to chess than 95% of the members of this place.

if you want to bitch about such irrelevant issues, i suggest you go and do so on your fantastic myspace blogs. leave chess to the people who appreciate it and enjoy it ... and aren't wrapped up in whether the world's number 1 player is "interesting enough" for your meagre opinions.

i really wish mods would up the standards and make these forums a little more respectable. it's embarrassing to read some of the tripe coming from the mouths of those who frequent this site.

Very very well said. Surely it can ONLY been seen as a positive thing, to have someone with this much potential in chess right now?

zankfrappa

Anand says he will not defend his title until 2012.

coming from norway i know that magnus plays alot of football, tennis and other sports so it puzzles my mind why you think he isnt fit enough when he is more fit than 95% of chessplayers. DEFINITELY not smart? please elaborate

theseancraig

Having some personality definitely helps (consider Peyton Manning's social impact), but if it's true that he has none, his talent alone has undoubtedly drawn additional attention to the game.

odessian

If you need the "charisma" of Fischer, then i feel sorry for you. Carlsen is already a legend and phenomenon. And if he is non charismatic for people who can't distinguish the knight and bishop then who cares. To me and million other chess players he is one of the games' highest authorities/

zankfrappa

I have been told Tiger Woods and a lot of these other athletes are
"charismatic" but I don't find any of them remotely interesting in an
interview.
The same applies to most actors.  In interviews they are rarely as
interesting as the characters they portray.
I would rather listen to Kasparov or Carlsen.

tigergutt

i guess using your sparetime beeing a keyboardwarrior on forums bashing players better than yourself is your definition of a cool personality then. magnus apologists? you really dont like this guy
