Why should we keep trying to find excuses for Carlsen's behaviour? Two weeks have passed since the "Niemann affair" started, and he hasn't said a word. He is proving himself an idiot, and that would hold even if he were right.

According to FIDE: "All information about complaints and investigations shall remain confidential until an investigation is completed ..."

So, a quite possible scenario might be occurring right now:

1) Carlsen submitted a cheating complaint (in writing)

2) An investigation is currently underway, by the Fair Play Commission. The FPL does not consider "he played better than his rating" complaints - therefore, if things have moved forward in that direction, then Carlsen has submitted actual evidence ...

3) Carlsen is not permitted to publicly speak about it until the investigation finishes, else FIDE would consider him in "breach of confidentiality" (hence his "I can't speak or I'll be in trouble" Tweet).

Stop messing around in Twitter and online games, then.

Fine, then Carlsen should continue playing Niemann unless and until FIDE concludes that Niemann cheated.  Chess.com makes clear that players should not accuse others of cheating (which Carlsen is clearly implying by his conduct), but rather privately submit the matter for adjudication.  Why is Carlsen held to a lower standard than the average Chess.com member?

Then he shouldn't have withdrawn from the Sinquefield Cup at all. Although Carlsen hasn't said anything since then, he has made a statement tacitly.

What anti cheating methods are in place here?

I checked with an engine: after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4! white has an edge. So, obviously, Niemann is cheating..... wink

Chess players, after winning a few games, sometimes think they have it all figured out. They should play a half decent computer sometime and probably lose 10 out of 10.  Carlsen could have been acting kind of cocky. I don't think it's that serious he's still a young guy.

this is childish... Makes him look bad and not Niemann

The only thing I can guess is Magnus isn't legally allowed to say what he wants to clarify himself. I just hope that he makes an official statement eventually to end this drama lol.

How can he not be legally allowed to say whatever he thinks ? He just want to get washed without getting wet. The proper way is to speak clearly or shut it off, but he isn't ok with either.

FIDE rules? contracts?

Then how come Hikaru virtually acused Hans of cheating on a livestream? He's also a FIDE player and has sponsor contracts.

Avatar of Pulpofeira

But his kind of sponsors probably love drama.

For those giving asinine explanations like "he's being childish", he obviously has very strong reasons for doing this. You don't have to like it, but to explain it away with flippancy is itself childish.

Yes, that's the point.

Carlsen is obviously boycotting horrible boring openings like d4 c4

Is Magnus scared?!? It really makes ya think.

Cheating allegations should come with proof.

I'm only going by the handbook, but according to FIDE rules, an investigation can only move forward if evidence is provided. They don't act on complaints or accusations alone.

So *if* the Fair Play Commission is currently involved (I'm assuming it is), then they're acting on more than just accusations. There's some sort of evidence being investigated, which the public doesn't know about.

That's unfortunate for the majority of us, who want answers to satiate our curiosity.

And Magnus seems determined to avoid playing Hans at all costs, in the meantime ...

I checked Stockfish after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 and if Black now plays 2...Nd5, the position goes from about equal to +640, so perhaps Carlsen did the right thing. happy.png

It looks to me like Magnus is trying to get tournament organizers to not invite Hans if Magnus is also playing.  It's like he's saying it's him or me.

Avatar of DreamscapeHorizons

I hadn't heard about that.  However,  if it's a choice for organizers of Magnus or Hans then they're gonna pick The Magster every time.
