People have been guessing for weeks what had happened, the statement has come now.

A reminder that:

  1. There is still no evidence that Hans has cheated OTB.
  2. We have proof that Hans has studied the Romanishin variation before the game, including seeing Carlsen use the same variation in a blitz game against So.
  3. Several GMs have supported Hans

There is no going back from this. Either one of these men - Magnus Carlsen or Hans Niemann - will have their reputation totally destroyed next year.

Hello!

Sure, cheating is bad, but I watched game of Niemann with Ukrainian good player, and I can say that Ukrainian player played bad

Thanks for posting this. Crazy stuff.

Some people really need to understand the difference between 'evidence' and 'proof'.

I was about to create a thread called "Thus spoke Carlsen" and then I saw this one . Thank you OP for saving me from making another worn-out reference.

Back to the topic, I'm glad Carlsen decided to speak at last. I still doubt he's right, but putting an end to the silence is the first step towards making this issue a bit reasonable. And I find particulary interesting what he said about the Sinquefield Cup game.

The opening in that game is unimportant - nothing really noteworthy at all - just both players developing their pieces.

The real game started at about move 18. From that point on Niemann mercilessly outplayed Carlsen. Stifling all of Magnus's attempts to squeeze something from the position.

Whether he did so legitimately or not ... is the real question.

So all we got at this point is

''I believe that Niemann has cheated more - and more recently - han he has publicly admitted. His OTB progress has been unusual, and throughout our game at the Sinquefield Cup I had the impression that he wasn't tense or even fully concentrating on the game in critical positions, while outplaying me as black in a way I think only a handful of players can do."

Not exactly the evidence people were hoping for, and no sign of remorse regarding his own course of action neither. Guess the Champ needs some vacation asap.

Total war has started between the two. War that won’t end until total destruction of one of them

There is just as much evidence that Magnus has cheated over the board as there is that Hans has. ( none!) I think Magnus is just being an ass and is just pissed that the great Magnus was soundly defeated!!

nice rhetoric, especially considering the flair you chose.

Those qualifying statements ("I believe that" and "I had the impression that") were likely inserted in there by his legal representation, to avoid possible repercussions.

His original draft of the statement probably did not have those words in it. But, when you're dealing with legal matters like these, you have your attorney(s) inspect and edit your statements first, to protect you from verbal missteps.

I'm actually surprised that we're seeing this statement at all, given that Niemann's legal rep has apparently sent "cease and desist" orders to Chess.com, Carlsen, and even GM Nakamura, as well ...

I am not talking about the semantics of the words he chose, I am referring to the lack of proof presented. As long as proof is absent, a statement by Magnus going 'I am 100% sure that mofo was cheating!' means the same as 'I believe / I have the impression '.

He's not the arbiter of his own games.

Does it make sense that Carslen would need Niemann's permission to speak more openly about it?

Cease-and-Desist order.

Nakamura mentioned that he had already received one, from Niemann's legal rep.

What a surprise everyone who thought magnus had evidence was wrong and its exactly as we said he lost form playing a bad game maybe even because he thought Hans was cheating but who cares end of the day hans is still a cheater and magnus still acted like a baby nothing new here.  All the people mad on twitter who demanded eh say what we already knew mad he doesn't have evidence now is funny tho.  All statements form here on out are decided from the pr guys and filtered through lawyers.   No ones career is destroyed they both gonna keep playing magnus gonna keep not playing him and its gonna be awks so no surprises at all.  As ben Feingold said magnus gonna do whatever the f he wants even if everyone thinks its a dick move / childish way of going about it he don't give an f.  No way hans lawyers let magnus speak freely I expect the speed at which people get bored with news cycle to see this disappear in about a month.

rookNoob1982

Sounds like Niemann gained a psychological advantage over Magnus. That would explain why he played below his usual skill. Hans seems like a very crafty fellow in terms of his presentation.

I imagine there’s a huge psychological component to OTB Chess at this level.

DreamscapeHorizons

Welp,  that sounds like an honest reply by Magnus. He just came on out and said it, that he thinks Hans is a cheater and he doesn't want to play him. In essence he's telling all tournament organizers,  don't invite Hans if u want me to play because it's him or me. Magnus will win that battle every time.
