Well, if it was Magnus vs the three (Naka, French guy, and Judit... forget names and stuff ya know) and they had to alternate turns or vote on the best move just between them, Magnus wouldn't have too much trouble winning.  Tandem chess doesn't always help, especially if your opponent is stronger to begin with.

But this is different.  Add to it that you will have a horde of amateurs skewing the vote.  The pressure is on Magnus to win, he certainly should.  It's hard to keep continuity between the moves.  Endgame and opening this isn't terribly bad, but in the middle game you'll wind up with a strategically worse position.

I guess they should shoot for something like in Kasparov vs the world, into a playable line that doesn't have a mountain of theory.  Who knows, maybe Magnus will lose or draw.  I think he should win though.

I'm definitley making Magnus the favorite.

1. Chess.com

2. 64 moves

3. Probably QGD

4. Definitely Naka

Naka will help us unleash a novelty on move 15, giving us a winning endgame.

I think Magnus will win. Number of moves can really be anything (within reason) so I'm just going to pick a random number; 42.  I don't know who has white and who has black so it's hard to decide on the opening. I think Judit Polgar and Nakamura should be equally influential, the French guy whose name I don't remember either not as much simply because the other two are famous.

1. DRAW

2. 6 moves

3. 1. a3 h6

4. that french dude i think

1. Carlsen wins.

2.  I dunno, anywhere from 40-50 moves probably.  Maybe a little more or less.

3. As someone else said, it's hard to guess the opening when we don't know the colors yet.

4.  Nakamura, I think.

It's a one-day vote match. Are we supposed to stay awake for 24 hours straight? What if the game hasn't finished by then - will it be adjudicated by Erik in our favour?

OK the questions

1. Magnum Carlsen wins already based on the format of picking moves for the "World" team alone

2. 36 moves or so when the website is pulled down

3. Bongcloud (if only we could get a bandwagon trend going for the first few moves, that'd be a cool way to ruin the rest of the game for everybody)

4. I think Pikachu Nakamura will be the most influential simply because the American kids rated around 1300 love him and his "beat the patzer" attitude. Lavache-Quirit seems more comprehensive and more able to share his thoughts. Polgár is just there for the royalties and the female touch - simply for the "look, women can play chess too" kind of vibe used to promote this game.

Why haven't these GMs published a series of preparation articles yet? How are we weaklings going to beat the world no. 1 like this?

The game starts in a week and we haven't even discussed the opening and overall strategy yet. Are we inviting back Ouachita? Will there be a special unit consisting of capablankamonte, Nosferatu and Alexandre-Kojeve?

Magnus should win it easily, it will take 50-60 moves though.

I hope it would be a Ruy, I sure hope that world wouldn't opt for c5 Frown

French dude will try to save us, but he will fail eventually

If Magnus is white and plays 1.e4 I have no doubt its going to be a Sicilian.. and if the World is white its going to also be 1.e4 Im guessing..

If the world can get a slight advantage in the opening, it will be a draw. If Magnus refuses to settle for a blah opening or Kasparov grabs Magnus's rook when it's Judit's move, then he wins.

Avatar of nimzo5

It will be a draw. Look for the vote team to move their opposite colored bishop around mindlessly in a closed position.

1. Carlsen wins

2. 59 moves - long fireworks display

3. Sicilian Dragon - why waste positional opening novelties on informal unrated games?

4. Nakamura - to play Dragon against white

Avatar of Kacparov

Any updates on how it's going to look? I can't find out sorry :(

Judit Polgar's peak rating is identical to Nakamura's. She has also been a top 10 player and made it to the final candidates round of the world championships - things that Nakamura has yet to do and may never do. But if it makes you feel better to ascribe her participation to, "look, women can play chess too", don't let me stop you ...

EDIT: For me, my choice for Nakamura was based on his playing style that would suite (and excite) an informal unrated game. It had nothing to do with his rating or accomplishments compared to anyone else's.

If Nakamura and Judit were to face one another in a match with traditional time controls and rules, I would bet that Judit would win. Smile

What a great opportunity to participate against the #1 Chess Player in the world today. Unfortunately, too many cooks always spoils the meal...so Magnus wins hands down. I am still to confirm the details of this exciting match. I remember when Pogonina played the world...after the match, she said she was trying to have a top GM face the world next on chess.com. Don't know if she had anything to do with this...I will need to put the 10th on my schedule.
