Given the extraordinary output from kingandmate on this forum, all presenting MC as just about the greatest idea run by the greatest people since Jonas Salk and his team eradicated polio, I humbly suggest that in his honor we retitle this thread to:

Shillionaire Chess

Interesting article in today's chess.com news. A quite lengthy interview is conducted with another promoter entering the arena and his ideas about the future of chess. Bassically he is trying to get Fide to recognize a 60 +30 time control.

Separate point:

Organizers have long realized it is nearly impossible to legislate new rules to try and prevent draws. Attempts of late are trying 3 or 2 points for a win.

mdinnerspace

What ya go and do that for bishop? Very soon we'll have another drawn out lengthy denial mixed in with old press copy that everyone has read.

JasonCarnage

Hm, a 60+30 rule ?

Seems a bit dubious to me.

It will result in games of less quality I fear.

The games of modern players might be looked down upon then, if they are being entered into the databases and compared to the games of the old masters who had more time in their games, allowing for deeper analysis.

Then again, with modern opening theory being researched so far into the game, maybe the players need less time for a complete game if the first 30 moves where theory anyway.

Still, less time to think will let them find engine best moves even less, causing viewers to be disappointed.

Jason.. all part of the arguement. You'd be called a purist wanting to maintain the quality of the game. The opposing view described is that computer programs are ruining the game. Opening theory runs 25 to 30 moves. There is no more a human element to the game. Speed it up, mistakes and all, and make the game more "human", mistakes and all. It's a different approach, some of the ideas have merit. Read the article. The promoter at least seems to be more realistic about the current state of chess than Ashley who proposes big payouts for amatures as the answer. He seeks and has received feedback from GM players. In the end he's promoting. Looking for profits and seeking sponsorship of which he has been more successful than MCO.

Senior-Lazarus_Long

Chess is perfect. No more variants.

mdinnerspace

Modern computer analysis of the "old masters" and their best games are filled with "blue and red". Innacuracies and mistakes. The games were "human" and remembered to this day for beautiful combinations and brilliant sacrifices.

Did we not have all of this before ?

I distinctly remember a time when speeding up of chess was all en vogue, and some people thought blitz or rapid was the future of chess.

Yet few today take blitz and rapid events as seriously as classical ones.

Though I guess some GMs at least might like the idea... same money, less work. Kinda like 9 move draws Laughing

You can keep accusing me of the same things. That doesn't make your claims/accusations true. Please stick to arguments of substance instead of personal attacks. Thank you.

To better understand Ashley's reaction to "drawgate" this is from his interview with the Guardian :

“Our model is based on TV and sponsorship. At the moment TV executives are not convinced it’ll make good television,” said Ashley. “The real win will be when it hits TV. Hopefully we can weather the storm until then.”

According to MC facebook, they are delaying it:

Due to the sad and untimely death of our new Chief Tournament Director Sevan Muradian and the additional loss of his team, MC is postponing the announcement of the details of our October event until further notice. Our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this might cause.

Does someone notice that Maurice did the Castle with the 2 hands in the NYC park Hustler? :)

The additional loss of his team? Are they saying before any announcements are to be made a New tournament director and staff need to be found? Seems a little odd the entire team pulled out. Wasn't Ashley the chief director for past events?

Ciak

The Tournament Director and the organizer are 2 separate and distinct ficures.

>Oh he was behind this?  Good riddance to that waste of DNA.<

Wow, what a nasty, ugly thing to say.

mdinnerspace

I'm of the impression Ashley was wearing both hats for 1 and 2.

The chief arbiter for MC1 and MC2 was  Francisco Guadalupe.  I don't think that Maurice is a certified arbiter.

mdinnerspace

Ok..thanks. When I read Ashley was making calls to other arbiters after drawgate, I assumed incorrectly he was acting as one.

Just when you thought chess was safe again. Well, I've seen the light. All hail the skulking grandmaster who can push a 5-move draw and win it all!
