Well, this very game, light variations of it and other similar drawing lines are seen suprisingly often in tournament practice. Players are often happy to draw with black and anyway the alternatives to Re8 don't enjoy as good reputation in this line and if white is also happy to draw for some reason (he might be lower rated, sick, tired or maybe wants to catch his favourite football team in tv...) then this is the result.
A related comment on this variation from "teach yourself better chess" by william hartson. Good book by the way, I suggest buying it.
"Interestingly enough, the move 9... h6 used to be a popular reply to 9. h3, with black planning to continue with Re8, Bf8, g6, Bg7, but fearing that Re8 immediately would be met by 10. Ng5 with an annoying attack on f7. More recently, blacks most popular continuation has been 9... Bb7 10. d4 Re8, ready to meet 11. Ng5 with 11... Rf8, regaining the time lost by kicking the knight with ...h6 next move"
Yesterday breyerian presented us an exact replica of one of the famous Greco games he had just won in live chess (see this thread: http://www.chess.com/forum/view/game-showcase/studying-classics-pays-off). He cannot be the first person to do so; I bet this very sequence of moves has been played more than thousand times.
Now that got me thinking. There are certainly games that have been played even more often. So that brings us to my main question: what's the most often played chess game? I would assume some variations of the scholar's mate must be near the top. What other candidates are there?
What about the most often played game at the master level or GM level? No scholar's mates here but the next one is often seen:
There are of course many other similar drawing variations in the opening theory but what about games where the players actually try to fight.
