My Chess.com Experiment

We all know that chess.com has a policy that aborting, abandoning, and timing out on games peanlizes you.  That penalty is being placed in a pool with other members commiting the same acts.

So as an experiment, I aborted, etc. a ton of games, so i could be placed in the pool with the bottom feeders.

Talk about a train wreck???  Its hell on earth.  If you want to witness cheating/sandbagging/e-thuggery at its best, thats the pool you want to experience.

I cant wait to get out of there.

You didn't play any rated games during your experiment.

Not that the ratings here really matter, but they are perceived by players as having some value and the only measure of success obtainable here. It seems reasonable to assume that people playing unrated games are less likely to care about the results.

With unrated games, there is not even the pretense that the games matter and so any cheating/thuggery/sandbagging exhibited there matters even less, doesn't it?  What would be the point of cheating/sandbagging if one obtains nothing from winning?

How is that a valid experiment?

If you knew how many requests for rated game rematches i would get, and the anger that ensued when i declined you would understand :-)

So are they going to punish a paying member that is seemingly breaking the rules?

The funny part is: "I can't wait to get out of there".  What?  Where are you?  Weren't they all unrated games?  From a human psychological standpoint, it's more likely for people to consider cheating in a meaningless / unrated game.  Try aborting many rated games.

See my previous response to this question, and it maes it that much more bizarre.

I'm kind of an idiot, could you summarize it?

sugata_ds94

I'm not too sure about the rating system here. We all know that ratings fluctuate a lot in the early days and then get stabilized. One of my friends was off for 6 months. Then he came back and found his rating fluctuating abruptly with single wins or losses. His glicko calculation suggested that the website completely forgot about his previous games but kept his old rating. Personally, I play ONLY UNRATED STANDARD games.
Also, the main hall is becoming more and more dirty. What's the point of preventing the new members from posting there when the old guns are firing abusive words?

Here read through this last parts of this, there is no point in summarizing as it would be simply copy and pasting.
