need to decide on an opening for white

hi all, ive recently started playing otb games for points and the point of this topic is, i want to learn an opening for white i can use every time so i dont keep getting to the board without a plan.

I know a bit about lots of the really well known openings but this is the problem, my oppenent always knows them to, and studying the 1000000variations of the ruy lopez for ex seems a bit daunting for a relativly new player like myself.

So what im really looking for is something a bit more offbeat, less seen, but still a good strong opening to get black out of comfort zone.

any suggestions?

Young man, try the King's Indian Attack.

Not sure how viable it is, but I don't see the Birds opening very often.

Queen's Gambit. Black really has only a few options:Falkbeer Countergambit(easy to study), Classical Defence[e6] (not difficult to study), Slav Defence(similar to the Classical Defence).

Oh yes, and he can accept the gambit. In which case you play e4.

I wouldnt suggest e4 as you have to deal with caro kann, sicilian, french and of course the open.
Queens gambit will run into all the indians as well as the accepted, declined, slav and multiple other uncommon responses.

I recommend the london system, it can be used against any black response, is solid (a little boring), but you do get real kingside attack prospects and very few lower rated players will have a response ready for it.

All of the "scary" chess openings you just named are openings I personally enjoy(from both sides!), while the London System looks a little weird to me. I'll peer more into it, but it seems boring and closed. Now, don't get me wrong, I like closed positions, but only if I have a space advantage.

The problem is that it's not easy to avoid theoretical lines in the indians. While you may enjoy them personally, it's not what the OP asked for.
