Hey,

This is Arun.

I'm a part of team Day & Knight, a chess hardware-software startup based in San Francisco. Two months ago, I posted a survey here, which got more than 200 responses.

It was one of the first steps we took to research what chess players would love made for them. We also received a lot of personal feedback, and ideas which helped us shape the idea. More than 75% of the survey-takers also said a resounding yes for one of the questions from the survey:

> "If you love playing real physical chess
with board and pieces - Do you think you
will benefit from a chess board which gives
you timing data, move listings, and game
history stored automatically?"

We gathered all that we could, and started working on the first prototype, a chess companion, to help you with getting better at the game.
Version 0.1 of the product is the foundation -- The core mechanics and technology that helps you play and record moves seamlessly.

Here's a sneak peek of what is to come: [Imgur Album here]

The functionalities of the first version of the product:

- Play with others and get automatic move listing and timing data.
- In-built chess clock
- Play real tactile Chess with others through the internet.

We're really excited about the potential improvements and additions to this technology. We want your help to help shape the future of this product. Sound off in the comments below and let us know what you think!

By the way, This is our website if you like to stay updated with our project dayandknight.co

Best,
Arun

Just realized that the board is setup wrong in the images. It's a computer generated image. We over looked it. Prototype looks fine though.

The board setup wrong in the images is classic :P

If you were to offer a more cost-effective alternative to DGT boards that was easier to make interoperable with a wider variety of devices - such as the iphone you illustrate in the mock-up - I am certain there would be a market for it.

I would love to learn more of this and I think there would be a Huge market for your product under the right circumstances

  • First, are you guys actually a small little company with a budget, a little office perhaps, people thinking and enough funding to get to the next step?
  • What IS the next step. you mention a prototype- does it work?  can you play against an engine with it??
  • how similar would you guys be to to say Dgt electronic chess boards?  would you be in a similar price?   I'm imagining that DGT would also be the closest 'competitor' to your company.
  • What  about chess Servers; have you gotten any thoughts about whether you could integrate YOUR product to chess.com Live games?

Make it version 1.0 and change in-built to built-in if you are going to include the term in the highlight features. If I'm being perfectly honest though this is a hard sell. I used to have one of those boards you could set up and play the computer on and had a blast with it, but you have to think about margins. Make it super fancy and elegant and market it as a luxury item.

Thanks for the feedback! We're definitely trying to find the best price point that works for us and every day chess players. It's definitely a delicate dance to get everything pefectly. :)

@arunjchess

any progress with the board you were making?

tewald

That is mostly from 3 years ago. Any progress? Personally, I don't want engines or storage; my PC has plenty of both. I simply want a physical chessboard that will communicate with my chess programs. There are plenty of DIY ones out there, but I have neither the skill nor the steady hands to build them.  Create a decent board that communicates via USB or Bluetooth, give it a reasonable price, and tell me how to order!

tewald

That sounds a bit cynical. :-(  You are suggesting it's probably all been dropped?
