127?!
That's surprised me a little.
They take your last 30 games which may explain why your grade is 127. If you played less than 30 this season, they will have used games from the previous season.
The ECF grades have just gone live, mine is 128. What is yours?

I beat you both... 129 (no genuinely 129)
I'll be playing in my school team next year, and thus will receive an ECF grade. There's one person in my team for next year I have played three times, all times the game was drawish but we've never had suitable time conditions to tell if we would hold the draw or have a decisive game. His rating is around 170 and so if I can draw with him, he estimated I would rank at least 150 if not 160. Just one question, are junior ECF grades (under 18) equivalent to 18+ grades? I expect that grades at my level will be inflated since we don't play adults who have more chess experience.
Junior grades are the same as adult grades but most of us know that kids' grades are usually lower than they should be due to rate of improvement.

By "junior" I am talking about aged 16-18, would that still be true in this case? With a less talented pool, ratings are likely to be inflated.
Prawn, would you like an unrated game? I would like to see how I fare against players with high ECF ratings :)
"With a less talented pool, ratings are likely to be inflated."
With a less talented rating pool, the ratings are lower. You don't have a chance to get your numbers up by playing the big beasts with the big grades. Believe me, adults hate playing kids (U18 is all the same, regardless of age), they're blood-thirsty little monsters who are also under-rated.
"Prawn, would you like an unrated game?"
Sure, send me an unrated challenge at 3 days.

Ha! ha! I don't even make the top ten at my club.

Ok I understand how that affects ratings. I'll send you the challenge and look forward to a tough game!

From the ECF website: For juniors, an enhancement is added to the Grade to take into account their expected improvement over the year.
Standard | Increment | Rapid | Increment |
0-10 | 10 | 0-10 | 10 |
11-17 | 5 | 11-17 | 5 |

Standard Increment Rapid Increment 0-10 10 0-10 10 11-17 5 11-17 5Makes sense, it's been some years since I was a junior. I thought they had done away with the enhancement.
I have never understood why the ECF chose a grading system that is so different to most other grading systems. Why not have 4 numbers like Fide, Chess Scotland, USCF?
Chess Scotland had to change the forumla we use to convert ECF to CS grades when ECF altered their grading system in 2009, the new formula is: ECF *10+180 = CS.
This makes my projected ECF grade about 150. What is the official Fide to ECF calculation, as my Fide Grade is 1696? The main reason I am asking is that I intend to play a tournament in England next year and I want to know which grade I should suggest as my most reliable playing strength.
A
I'll be honest, I still don't get why ECF insists on a rating system that's very incompatible to virtually every other rating system used. Also, the official ECF rating conversion formulas look off to me. It seems like they will, in general, give you a overrated FIDE or USCF rating by a good 100 points at least. So take that into account with any conversion you do. Also, the lower your rating the higher the deviation seems to be. It's only really high ratings that seem to convert nicely.
Below: Nonsense! Everything's better with an extra digit! Let me put it this way: Would you rather get $100 or $1,000?
Part of ther problem is historical:
BCF/ECF gradings (started 1954) predate FIDE and USCF ratings (started 1970's).
p.s. Also, three digits is plenty to differentiate between rank beginner (say 50 ECF), strong club player (say 160 ECF) and Grandmaster (say 240 ECF). The extra digit seems superfluous. Maybe, it's just that everything is bigger in the US?
