Openings which are with the white pieces never have the word "defense" with them.

They can have the word "attack" sometimes, but never defense.

The white pieces are always considered attacking because they move first.

The black pieces are always considered defense because they move second.

It is a understood rule or idea in chess which people don't really talk about.

However, I figured I would tell you since it seems you don't "know".

Recommendations As White:

  • Ruy Lopez

If you really like the Italian Game.

I think you might enjoy the Ruy Lopez.

Usually players who like the Italian Game often fall in love with the Ruy Lopez later on in there chess career.

The main reason why is because of the pawn structure and the plans of c3 and d4 are kind of similar.

The Ruy Lopez is actually a line you can play the rest of your life.

It is a Grand Master level line.

If you don't like how the Italian Game is or maybe not a big fan of the Ruy Lopez.

Than you will need to venture into other lines entirely.

Other lines which are playable:

  • Scotch Opening

I wrote a blog on that one so you can click the below link to see if you like it or not.

http://www.chess.com/blog/X_PLAYER_J_X/scotch-opening

  • Vienna Game

The below lines I listed are GM level lines.

They can be used by you the rest of your chess career as a main weapon.

  • Ruy Lopez
  • Scotch Opening
  • Vienna Game

The next lines I am going to list are more Beginner level lines.

They are very solid lines;however, eventually you may trade them for more aggressive lines. They can be used in GM level chess though.

  • Three Knights & Four Knights

  • Italian Game - You already play this one so I will not show you the position.

The last lines I am going to list are more for fun lines.

They are not that great. You can use these lines for fun!

  • Kings Gambit

  • Danish Gambit

  • Ponziani Opening

Hopefully you can find a opening you like from the above ones I listed.

I hope it helps you.

I wrote lines which all can stem from 1.e4 (King Pawn Opening)

An this guy wanted to play 1.c4???

Why didn't you say that in the begin you troll!

Superodias2

Lol sorry I didn't mean to be like that

profmain

I play the English but it's very different than your usual openings. I'd work on it for a while before using it or you can end up frustrated.

Isn't it like the Sicilian but your white ?

It is not completely the same as a Sicilian because you will be a tempo up.

The reason you will be a tempo up is because you are using the white pieces.

Bascially if all you have played is 1.e4  than when you switch to 1.c4.

You will be a beginner all over again.

Everything you know will be wrong and you will have to relearn everything new again.

Your ranking will go down as well.

However, the plus side is if you learn it your ranking will usually come back higher than before.

Simply because you will have the knowledge of both 1.e4 and now 1.c4

One Warning I shall give you is you will have to be careful when using the English Opening.

The reason why is because some of the lines can tranpose into 1.d4 openings.

Profmain I seen your recent games. Is that a queen gambit or is it the English in asking cause you put your c d and e pawn all on 4 squares

X player j how long did it take you to get to your rating

After looking over some of your games, you need for get about being "tactical" and learn how to play the opening.  You need to understand pawn structures, and how not to drop pieces, and miss simpe tactics.

I think it has been 2 years now.

However, I am not sure.

If its the game I think you're talking about its the English (in the English Opening tournament). My opponent went for an Anglo-Indian or King's Indian which allowed me to grab the whole middle uncontested.

X_PLAYER_J_X

If Profmain started with 1.c4 the line is known as the English Opening.

However, if Profmain ended up with 3 pawns in the center on c4, d4, e4 than the line tranposed from English Opening into a Queen Pawn Opening.

There is a very sneaky move order in that line.

Which I really do hate lol!

In the above position some white players would follow up with 2.d4

Which would tranpose from a English Opening into a Queen pawn Opening.

However, I have seen a sneaky move order which has been used against me.

It happens after 2.Nc3

Believe it or not I am Gruenfeld player!

which means if white plays the move 3.d4 the line is turned into a normal Queen Pawn Opening.

I would respond with 3...d5 which is the Gruenfeld!

However, I have had some English Opening basters play a sick 3rd move against me lol.

Yeah they play 3.e4

Sick basters!

Well needless to say the idea of playing 3...d5 going into a Gruenfeld is out of the question.

The sick basters.

Now black is left with the moves

3...d6  = going into a KID

3...c5  = like a symmetrical english of sorts

3...e5 = going into another type of KID

Because of this problem.

I have stopped playing 1...Nf6 against 1.c4

Those sick basters.

shivank2005

when c4 is played is simply play e5 nc3 nc6 g3 f5 bg2 nf6 means i play reserved grand prix and attack
