Magnus has been my hero for almost 7 years now. A day hasn't gone by without me dreaming about him. 4 years ago, I remember by brother telling my parents, "I want to just like Magnus Carlsen when I grow up!" Magnus has been an idol for many young up and coming chess players such as myself. Carlsen was supposed to be second coming of Bobby Fischer, the hero that chess needed.

Everything changed in game 12 of the world chess championship. This event was the most anticipated event of 2018. Chess fans and normal people alike all sat down on on November 9th 2018 to watch the championship. I sat down for hours watching the match, not missing a single minute. However, by game 12, my whole opinion of Magnus changed. The moment he offered a draw my heart dropped.

How could he have offered that draw? I was upset, furious, depressed, so many emotions were rushing threw my head. Then I realized, Magnus isn't out for the people. He wasn't playing chess for the entertainment for chess enthusiast. He was playing for the title. I felt betrayed. This is the man I have worshiped. This is the man that I've skipped lectures just so I can watch him play the royal sport. This is the man I've idolized for years.

I was ashamed to be a chess player. I spent hours upon hours studying chess so I can one day become world chess champion just like my hero. This has got to stop.

Magnus Carlsen's leadership poses a threat to the peace and safety to the chess world. His immoral reputation and misconduct are an embarrassment and threat to chess enthusiasts. This will not be tolerated by chess fans.

Does anyone truly believe that any top professional chess players’ number one priority is pleasing the fans?

Come on... get real everyone! It’s to make a living doing what they’re good at, and everything else comes second.

If anyone believes that any other player wouldn’t offer or take a draw in a situation that would benefit them, then they’re deluding themselves. It’s a common strategy, and it happens in nearly every single tournament going!

Come on, get over it, and enjoy your own games and those of the players you do like!

But the way the tiebreak was determined was so unfair!

Great post. I agree. Magnus’ behavior was disgusting

Avatar of Sean_Cooper
Sorry what was unfair?

That Carlsen is a better rapid player? That he was smart enough to play to his strengths?

Last time I checked both players had the same number of white games, the same number of pieces... Exactly the same opportunity to win the match as each other.

There was nothing unfair about this match.

If people want to complain about the format then take it out on FIDE and the organisers. It’s not Magnus fault the game was run how it was. And Caruana knew what he was signing up to.

I believe that Bobby Fischer is rolling over in his grave right now, after this world championship I agree with Fischer’s idea of the first to win 10 games becomes the champion.

You're not serious, right?  You didn't actually take that post seriously, did you?  I'm really hoping you didn't.

😄 First to win 10 games?! They’d be playing for months.

OP needs to take a deep breath and go outside.  The dude won, fair and square.   Claiming that offering a draw WHEN YOU ARE LIKELY WINNING is bad sportsmanship is so rediculous.   I thought it was brilliant.  The whole damn game is about strategy, why would you NOT be strategic during the tournament.

Interviewer:  Is chess art, or war?

Magnus:  War.

(Art is for spectators.)

I would say:  Chess is a two-player strategy board game played on a chessboard, a checkered gameboard with 64 squares arranged in an 8×8 grid.

my god. no need to cry. he was favored in the tiebreaks. he wanted to reach the tiebreaks so he can win. and he did. now who is your champion? caruana? the runner-up?

Does this matter? He could've won in game 12. He could've showed his champion spirit but instead he offered a draw like a coward. This is not the man I've admired for the past 7 years of my life.

WWFHD

What would Fischer have done? Would he offered a draw like a coward? No! He would've played to the end.

Mind you, you're the same person who claimed that your previous account's rating was 2000 but your sister made you lose all your games on this account which is why you're unable to get to 2000 on this account.
