One minute games? Why...

Is there any value to playing one minute games?

Value in terms of chess improvements and maybe even som value off the chessboard?

I’m skeptical but want to hear your thoughts.

Instincts.

Faster ability to shortlist candidate moves.

Ability to handle yourself in time trouble.

Etc.

It all depends on how you view it.  Fast controls are good when played in conjunction with slow games in a suitable ratio.

Okay that makes a lot of sense. Especially with the advice of balancing with longer games.

At what point does it come down to finger/arm speed? I introduced chess to a guy at work because he wanted to learn, but he would get slaughtered by a bunch of us amateurs. One day, he discovered bullet chess, and that was all he wanted to play, because he was scoring around 50% against the rest of us. He had better instincts?

Hand eye coordination, the quality of your mouse, mobile vs computer (mobile is harder to maneuver), etc. all of those things factor in.

Also, his depth of processing was probably shallower which allowed him to move faster. I actually played better in those games after a drink.

They also have an addictive quality. It’s like gambling- I can play one more, it’s only a minute. Ugh, I lost. Just one more...

+1 This is what I do. Given, I can't play bullet that well at all (nor do I play it much at all). This is what I do for online blitz though. I balance online blitz with OTB longer games when I play and I think it has served me well for my chess learning ability.

TheCalculatorKid

it's addictive as hell due to the time pressure

It's so much fun! The speed gives you an incredible rush

It really doesn't. Some people have better instincts. Plus he might play bullet strategies (or just play at a bullet pace). I'd suppose you play a but too slow for bullet trying to find accurate moves meaning even though you're better slow chess players you end up losing.

I think bullet games are as dangerous (in terms of addiction) as marvelous. Winning a series of short games is like driving a super fancy fast car, I guess. Definitely worth trying!Though I do like combining them with blitz.

You will not be good at one minute games unless you are already good at slower controls.

One minute games are all about the rush you get playing.

Yup, makes a lot of sense. Thanks for chiming in guys.

Yeah I had a serious addiction. I remember there were days where I would play 100-200 games then come out of the trance like, “where am I?” Lol
