Opponents complaining about draws

Sort:

I've had several opponents try to rip me after I ended up playing into draws. They say the same thing "only losers/dumbasses/etc. go for the draw. My thing is, if my opponent has me on the ropes and I somehow wiggle my way out and force a draw how is it my fault? Am I not supposed to force the draw? I always ask those opponents if they expect me to HELP them win?

What do u guys think about draws in general and about players complaining about them?

Just ignore them.

I think it shows how prevalant the emotion of anger is in chess.

One of my favorite games was when i was playing a higher rated player and i was able to sack a rook which forced him (because of a check) to take the rook and this created a stallmate. However unlike some of your opponents he was a very good sport about it. Anytime you are behind it is of course bettter to create a draw if you are able to rather than losing the game.

Resigning is more honorable, but if your rating means that much to you that you want the cheap draw then it's your choice.

Do not pay attention to that guy.

Draws are part of the game.

If your opponents don't like you wiggling your way out of the jaws of defeat, then maybe they should just play better and not let you draw.  Drawing is a part of the game, just as much as winning is and if they are unable to win, they don't deserve a win.  Honestly, just turn off the chat if your opponents are being annoying about it.

It still amazes me the whining, bitching, complaining, and moaning that goes along with online chess.  No where else but online is a draw considered wrong, resgning "honorable", chatting "good game", and "good luck" insulting, and my all time favorite "<insert name here> cheats"

Many of you need to turn off the computer, and play in a real OTB tournment.  Real life is so much better than hiding behind a monitor playing e-thug.  You knw...actually just turn off the computer, go outside...enjoy life....interact with real people, and have some fun!

That sounds scary though

I find myself disagreeing with every single one of your posts. This one is no exception.

This is why I play 'house rules' when playing with friends otb. If its stalemate the person who cant move LOSES. After a position repeats itself twice you are FORBIDDEN from checking again. Not enough material on the board then you both close your eyes and pick a piece each randomly from the captured pieces and point to the board. Whatever square your finger lands thats where it goes.

..... and can you play a "get out of check free" card as well ?

Can i pass d4 and collect an exra pawn?

Drawing only makes the battle better. Kasparov vs. Karpov 1984, a true clash of the titans.

Nope. Losers, by definition, lose.

Chess, in my opinion, is art.  If you are in a lost position and you can manage to draw, that's ok, and you should do it.  As someone already said, if your opponent complains, just ignore or close the chat option.  The rules of chess are fairly enough to make the game such as rich as it is.  I don't even like to play those variants (King of the Hill, 3 checks, and so on).  Nothing against who likes those variants, but I like chess as it is, in his normal rules.  To draw in a lost position is not only fair enough, it is a must!

If someone wants to change the rules of chess, it will be another game, not chess anymore.

A Dutchman complaining that the national product of another country could distort your thinking? Slightly ironic Tongue Out

What, there are people out there?

If you have losing position and have the possibility to draw the game - go for it! I don't really understand the point of this discussion. Why should anybody expect you to surrender the game when you can save half a point? If I were you, I wouldn't care what such people say.
