Playing Blitz OTB

Hello.

I was wondering what it's like to play blitz in real life. I've only really played it online. I would imagine it is much harder otb. You actually have to avoid illegal moves and have to physically move the pieces. It would probably also be much more intense and exciting. I believe it would probably take a lot more time to move the pieces on a real board than a few inches across a screen. Premoves would also not exist.

To anyone who has played a lot of blitz, especially to anyone who has played in a blitz chess tournament, what is it like? Are my assumpions correct?

I'm also interested in the movement of the pieces. Watching players like Nakamura swiftly and accurately sliding the pieces across the board amazes me. Do you think he has practiced doing piece-moving exercizes? That would be some amazing dedication... :)

I've also seen in some of these professional blitz games that players seemed to be touching pieces before their opponent touched their clock. Isn't that illegal? They couldn't have possibly kept track of the exact time they touched the piece. Maybe there is just some mutual respect or maybe both players know that it would be impossible to prove such a thing happened.

Then there's always the possibility that a player may create a diversion which requires the arbiter's attention and pause the clock while still examining the board. How are things like this regulated?

Thanks

For the ruling on the clock, in OTB, a players move is only finished after they have pressed the clock. If you see your opponent hand on his piece, before you have pressed your clock, you may claim this ruling. But because this ruling is so hard to monitor, it's usually up to the local arbitor to decide. In blitz making a illegal move, allows your opponent to claim the game, this does require more focus, cause you might step into check and lose the game, remember if you have not pressed your clock, your opponent cannot claim anything. Get a Digital chess clock, a good board and you can easily practice moving the pieces fast, I played 10 seconds to 5 minutes Vs some people I know, in my opponion ones Blitz skill is only good, if one is good at slow chess. Blitz feels more to me to test ones knowledge.
