Playing Under Pressure? Help? (PUP)
manage your time plan all your moves so that they fit with the time control also enabling premove option can save you when you have 1 second left you should also try playing longer games more often if you don't!
Playing a lot of bullet will make the 5 second delay seem like a long game.
I've gotten down to under 10 seconds a number of times without getting anxious... I lose most of those games (my position is usually bad too), but I'm not anxious, normal heart beat, etc.
With practice in speed games you'll be able to think in groups of moves instead of individual moves. You'll get a lot of practice winning clearly won games with nothing but premoves. You'll also have practice doing things like making non-moves just to have longer to look at the board. For example if the kings and pawns were in black's kingside quadrant, then your hand can play Rc1-c2-c3-c1-c2-c3 while you think about what to do next.
These benefits, shortcuts in the thinking process, are also a curse when you have time to do analysis... but only if they become habits. Ideally you can slip into and out of that mode without too much trouble. So maybe play 2/0 or 3/0 games until you're getting the feel for it. Maybe this would take a few weeks. Then play normal length games, and only mix in a few speed games now and then.
I know that one of my weaknesses is definitely playing under time pressure. For example yesterday I played an opponent who was a 160 points higher than me and I was up a rook + K vs. 2 pawns + K. Although I had only one second left on my clock with a 5 second delay so I we agreed on a draw. How do I get better at PUP?
