I always think of the Dunning-Kruger curve, so beginner ego indicates they haven't improved yet and still get by on natural intuition. Lower confidence suggests a higher class of playing strength but may even be lower rated since they have started learning to play differently, they probably have better emotional control than other beginners though. Quite sure of themselves is about intimediate player, no longer a simple hobbiest, they are a strong chess player but recognise they arent still close to titled players and have a lot to learn, then titled players have built a new appreciation for themselves and their skill but still are vulnerable to say I dont have all the answers, top level would be a mixture of "im the best" competitive mentality and "ego transcendence" peace minset. Thats my hypothesis

#3. I agree with you and that's true. Beginners who have a winning streak feel like their ego is getting bigger and consider the best of chess players of all time. 😂🥰

I'm sorry for the laughing emoji but I find this topic hilarious. 😂🥰

I think 99% of "prideful players" are misunderstood. Most players that aren't 100 IQ just chomp on hanging pieces and get high elo. To add to that, 99% of opponents continue to hang pieces to gobble up for breakfast. So what #4 said isn't out of the question, but not prideful, maybe a bit of luck for that player at worst.

The boastful, pedantic, and domineering ones I find clownish. They are the ones in the threads acting as gate-keepers, spouting engine analysis and trying to push out any view but their own. Their arguments are often just engine-analysis lines without any reference to how humans actually react to solving problems under pressure. When all else fails they imply some unique knowledge do to their elevated rating as if that gives them special status. They actual are just trying to impose social status based on rating and are nothing but blowhards. Just tell them you aren't convinced and watch them melt down, posting entire pages of erudite, faux-scholarly chess ramblings. They are just chess-engine peacocks.

#10. You're also right. They just wannabes at the end of the day.

Pride grows in a player when they reach a respectable rating and let that get to their head. Their overconfidence stems from fragility.

It's not fragility if their opponents just keep hanging pieces
