When i resign do i pause the clock? And if i checkmate do i pause the clock as well? And what are some notable unwritten or written rules in etiquette regarding chess clocks that i should know?

Resignation and checkmate end the game so there isn't normally a need to stop the clock. But on checkmate, you should at least hit your click so there is no question in case time runs out whether or not the checkmate happened before the time control

Before starting a game, if the clock is not yours, have someone explain/demonstrate its functions; especially its display within a few minutes left to play.

Black has choice of which side of board it is placed

When you resign, the clock no longer matters. Let it run, shake hands and congratulate opponent, sign score sheet. If the clock is not yours, let the owner stop it. If it is a loaner, let white stop it.

If you checkmate, press clock for opponent to review & evaluate the position on their time just in case you overlooked something.

Ask the Director about protocol for instances when you have to call them to resolve a position, dispute, etc.
