Quitters who don't resign

Any suggestions on what to do when you are playing someone who decides (for whatever reason) they don't want to finish the game and they don't resign (or at least disconnect), so you have to sit there waiting until their clock runs out?

What's a foe button?

I don’t think there should be anything to do about this. This is exactly how it could work in the real life over the board. Someone could actually be present in the room and take every last second of their time and that would not make you the winner. Would it?
In their mind maybe the opponent has “resigned”, or they know that they cannot win.

But why shouldn’t they take every last second to evaluate their position. For example if they are not sure they cannot win; or if they are not sure whether you could make a blunder; No one except the highly skilled players could be confident with absolute certainty that they cannot win.

I have a real life example where I had a losing position over the board in the tournament at my city’s chess club. I was playing a kid about 10 years old this time. I thought, well, since I paid the money to enter the tournament anyway, why not play as long as I at least so I could save face somewhat. To my surprise the kid started to become annoyed and impatient. I think he expected I would just resign and he’d get an easy win. He started huffing, and puffing and when he could have mated me a number of times (I saw afterward) he actually makes an error and loses a piece. Maybe it was even a queen. I don’t remember. Well, he lost.

As far as playing online, yes, you will get annoyed if the player leaves. In that case, put down the game and just wait. You signed up for it and you know it could take the time it takes, so no one owes you to resign just so you could move on to the next game. If you are not willing to wait however long it takes then don’t start playing games which could take long.

Some game sites allow you to "foe" someone who harasses you or is very annoying.  They are banned against playing against you again unless you unfoe them.

If you think about it why shouldn't chess.com give the option of a foe button?  If someone thought another player was cheating or not, the foe button would allow them to avoid playing someone they had doubts about.  But mostly it would be helpful for those who are abusive in language or just annoying to the point you can't enjoy a game with them.  There are thousands of players so it wouldnt hurt the site to allow some choice in whom you play.

Isn't there already a good/bad sport prompt at the end of a game?

You may be right.  I don't play enough games to really know.  Does it ban any future games with that opponent unless you unban them?

If you mark the person as a bad sport you are prompted to block.  Nothing else.

Maybe a fie button would be more powerful.

On a Risk site I play on they have that option.  I have had some very annoying and verbally abusive players to the point that if I was forced to continue playing against them I would have quit the site long ago.  I have even had players beg me to unfoe them because they aren't allowed to join any multiplayer games I start.

I thought quitters actually did resign. Or did I miss something?

No it’s like winners that do quit

We definitely need a fie button. And also an evil eye.

For protection, a babaji button as well.

that is considered stalling/ quitting games by chess.com. You could get reported. The kid you played could've told the TD and you should get at least a warning.

Click the thumbs down button after the game is over.  For what good it does, I have no idea.
