Realistic Goals
I was 28 when I started playing online chess here around 2013. I hadn't played in years but I always beat my friends growing up so I thought i was good. I got humbled very quickly. My rapid rating settled at around 800. I had lots of free time back then so I decided to study my butt off and see how good I could get. I doubled my rapid rating in the first year. It took several years of playing but at my peak I was 2000 rapid and 1900 blitz. Significant improvement is possible even for adults if you put in the work. Sadly I got frustrated with the game and all the cheaters I was encountering in rapid so I closed my account and quit for several years. Now im back with a more casual mindset. Im 40 with kids now so I don't have time to study. I just have the modest goal of getting my ratings back to where they used to be.
My friend and I have decided to start seriously studying chess and next summer we plan to travel to compete in USCF sponsored tournaments.
I was president of the chess club in high school but have played very infrequently over the past 25 years.
What are some realistic goals I can set as I begin training again?
What's a good Puzzle Rating on chess.com? I am thinking to aim for 2200 over the next 12 months.
I'd like to ideally get close to being a Class A player, if possible. I realize it is hard at my age but I have the dedication and resources.
Right now I am doing lots of tactics training (Woodpecker Method plus other stuff) and this summer I plan to do intense study of endgames before getting out my old Silman books.
