resigning

When checkmate is obvious (forced checkmate), I use conditional moves; so either way I don't have to "wait" or "loose time". Until forced checkmate is possible, anything can happen regardless of the material (depending on the opponents strength)

My oppinion is: a game is a  game with all of its elements  and rules and both players can make their decision given those decisions are legal. Winning is winning and losing is losing. Ofcourse it gives me more satisfaction to win my opponent with check mate rather than with time for instance but in the end, what matters is, that the points of this game are added to my scoreSmile..

this is chess ,resign pleas

Queenie

I have resigned in the past, and that's mainly when I know absolutly that I can't win or get a draw. I like to play to the very end, because otherwise how will I ever learn the end game.  I find so many chess players, give up at the drop of a hat. (One player resigned the moment I took his queen. I find that cowardly and slightly arrogant). The game should be played until there is a definate win.

If you are compleatly busted then it is dis to carry on but sometimes if it gets under the skin offer draws and play on they may not be totally awaere of the fundementals of that ending and blow it

Are you serious??!  You got it totally wrong.  If the guy didn't resign after you took his Queen, it would be equivalent to him saying:

"You suck so much, I can still win or draw this game, even with you being a Queen (9 pts) ahead."

Now that's what I call arrogant.  But since he resigned - he simply said:

"You won - with this material advantage, I am positive you'll be able to mate me, no need to delay the inevitable".

Am I alone in thinking that asking an opponent to resign is the absolute height of rudeness?

I agree - you should never ask your opponent to resign.  They should realize it themselves.

Another aspect I don't believe has been discussed yet is that "turn-based chess" exaggerates the effect of playing beyond having hope of a draw.  These games do not have to finish under time control;  a player does not need to complete some number of moves in a fixed amount of time.  This takes the clock out of the game and takes away a stragetic reason for a loosing player to play on.  Given this nuance to the game, I think it is a courtesy to resign if you can not see any hope to win or draw.

yeah you can have a rematch but i think you should win buy checkmate not just people resigning,i find checkmate more satisfying

as a beginner, the resigning thing is very stressful to me...it also means i am total crap at any endgame moves, since if i do ok in the beginning, the game ends with a resignation.  also, when i look at other people's games, often i don't see the end, since they have resigned.

the good aspect of resigning is that it saves me the humiliation of playing to the endgame.

i have come to the conclusion that one should study openings and middlegame strategies - with the resignation procedures, you're never going to have to play the endgame anyway!
