BTW - some players don't like having their games posted and analyzed, so if your want me to stop, just say so.

Just wanna see you get to 500+.

Avatar of dokerbohm

you present for me a kind of aggressive style of play attacking more than defending  i  will study this game a few times and see if i can remember those moves when i play --  but i must caution you i will never make 500 no matter what i do -- iam a bottom feeder guy 100 to 150 then back again and that will never change

i seem to do better against other 100 to 125 players but i can't seem to just play those  kinf of players ---they always after i win one then set me up with a 175/200 /225 type player which i always lose

but i will keep pluging along

right now iam trying to play different zone  defense system always on the king side wheather white or black --  to see if i can increase my move number up from 20/30 moves to 40/50 moves  till i lose

thanks for the input

Totally disagree. Anyone can get 500 if they follow the opening principles:

1) Control center. Meaning pawns and pieces controlling those all-important center squares (d4, d5, e4,e5).

2) Never move the same piece twice in the opening. Unless you have a darn good reason - threatened or can take a hanging piece. The opening of chess is a RACE TO DEVELOP.

3) Don't move queen early! The queen is easily attacked and has to move again and again... thus breaking rule #2.

The opening principles helped me immensely when I started because I broke all those rules. I guarantee it'll work for you too. After that, it's only a matter of not hanging pieces, and capturing your opponents hanging pieces.

Give 'em hell Doker!

well iam going to try that taking control of the four major squares thing- about 500  nice for you to think that anyone can  reach that goal - but then again all through my life - i have never reached a goal i set for myself always giving up or changing plans to other things  when things got hard etc etc

not much of a goal obtainer kind of guy -- i only this late in life -   just do what i find relaxing trying not to think about getting ahead in anything i do -- knowing now after all these years that nothing i do  amounts to !@#$%^- so i just enjoy what iam doing right this moment for the sake of just doing it for what it is now

thanks for the thought mind you ---and i will try that control centre 4 square thing --as what iam doing now gives me win one game lose two  till i go back to 100  -

Avatar of dokerbohm

well i tried that just going for control of the middle four squares and lost every game under 15 moves -- hummmmmmmmmmmmmm must be i need different approach  -- went back to regular defence style opening for me -- winning or drawing about 50 % of the time -- still in basement mind you but need to get my mind more focus twice i lost due to time because i was day dreaming looking at my opponents set for too long -- need to get that move 8/ 9 down quicker keeping it under 10 seconds maybe 15 tops-

If you want to improve, stop playing 3 minute blitz. Play 30+0, or 15+10, or another long time control like that. Then, select a move like normal. Do not play your selected move, though. First check two things:

1) Is the square my piece is moving to attacked by an opponents piece already? If this is true, don't play that move.

2) With my opponent's last move, did they move a piece to a square that I am attacking? If this is true, take it.

Do you know the values of each piece already? (Queen is worth 9 points, rook is worth 5, bishops and knights are worth 3, and a pawn is worth 1.)

More development before moving king, rook, queen and more pawns. Easier to attack with ALL your knights and bishops.

Better development in this game... could've been a little quicker, but at least they all got out. Just a few sloppy moves hanging pieces at the end, but whatever. Good game.

Keep doing that in your openings! That was excellent. But ya gotta recapture pieces when he trades them. That one got away from you, but still it was a great opening.

i don't ever remember that i  played this game  sure looks very different from  my normal opening  yes i get lost after about 10 moves what to do

Play longer time controls no moving until you look at every move for at least 30 seconds.  you play too fast

i am up to 145 score  this wed. morning  - better than the basement9100) -- i see most people here want me to play longer games tried that and i only lose the same  number of games or more--  but it just takes longer to find that at  move 36 or 45 i am out smarted by a smarter player - when i play 3 min games i can get three games in 10 min. usually winning one game out of three - when i play 10 min games -- i  think the ratio is win one game in 5 games - so at ten min games its a downward trend always to 100 score  and yes its the same at 3 min games it just takes longer to reach to the bottom on a avg. day

also a good point is in a 10 min game the opponent has longer to think about his next move-- i already have that  next move in mind  and he has time to counter-  but in the 3 min games he has to think just a fast as me or he times out

i will this afternoon try a couple of ten min games as i have some extra time to play --so will see what happens

thanks for the input though

No. Play longer games, and DON'T HANG PIECES. You're just giving up pieces for no reason. For instance, look at this game:

Not giving up free pieces and taking free pieces from your opponent is the ONLY thing you should focus on at your level. If you do that you will win almost every game.

Avatar of neatgreatfire

The reason you should play longer games is because you will have time to check each move before you play it to make sure you can't take a free piece from your opponent and to make sure none of your pieces are hanging. For instance, on the game I just showed you you spent 1 second on nbd7, losing you the game. If you had stopped to think about it, you would've realized it gave your opponent a free queen and that you could just take the knight to prevent that.

Avatar of Snookslayer

Doker, this is your finest opening of all time.  Keep doing this quick development! Now all you have to do is stop hanging pieces and you're on the path to greatness!

Longer games results in better moves and more learning... but heck, do what you like. It's supposed to be fun. I'm always playing different time formats - whatever I'm in the mood for.

But you have to actually go slow.  I looked over your rapid games you played just as fast as blitz the total time is not the issue forcing yourself to spend 30 seconds even Mutiple minutes thinking on each move is important if you set the timer to 30 minutes but play 25 moves in 2 minutes that did nothing.  You must force yourself to think the moves through thoroughly before each and every move to grow.   you play too fast

It is not necessarily true that a chess player must go slow and take a long time to think on each move in order to improve their game. The speed at which a player thinks and makes their moves can depend on many factors, including their skill level, the complexity of the position, and the time control of the game. Some players may prefer to take more time to think on each move, while others may prefer to play more quickly. Ultimately, the most important factor in improving one's chess skills is to carefully analyze the position and make well-considered decisions, regardless of the time taken to do so. It is also important to note that chess players often play different types of games with different time controls, and it is not uncommon for players to play more quickly in rapid or blitz games compared to games with longer time controls.
