One guy said today in live chess in the main chat room to another guy "You play like a girl". Sexism here is alive and well unfortunately. These guys need to play against the better female chess players on this site, and then open their mouths.

Unfortunately I am not as good as a lot of them, but working on it, and have beaten many fellows. Thankfully, most of them weren't bothered at all that they were beaten by, OMG a girl! But I have played a few whose egos were pretty bruised.

Keep at it!  If the women work on it the inflection on "play like a girl" will go from derision to a very respectful state of terror.

I now understand why Korchnoi was very upset when he got beaten by Sophia Polgar in the following video:

this topic had been raised before in this site under different title, it reminds us of"white man cant jump".....and "why dont we have a white man  winning a 100 m running race".....i used to be   basketball player and hated   this staff.....recently i passed by some articles talking about scientific evidence that   due to differences in the exchange of oxygen in the muscles betwwen people with  dark skin and those with white skin , makes it is more PROBABLE that those with dark skin to excell in such sports.......its matter of probability .....and until there is a similar scientific evidence due to physiological differences that makes the PROBABILITY of excelling in chess is more in men, so nobody can say that with real objective , statistics may be due to plenty of reasons ........so i suggest that these types of comments fall under racism, that we should refrain from committing

But I am a white man, and I can beat my dark skined friend in a 100 metres sprint !

when we talk PROBABILITY it worth noted at top of the line area ....world championship....olympics....those at the high end........or else me and u can beat polgar in chess !!

there are some who would find your attempt at chivalry sexist, and therefore self-defeating.

There may be some who would think that, but they would be wrong.  The devil's in the semantics here: chivalry may indeed be considered sexist, as it deprives a woman of equal footing with a male counterpart.  But the original post was not chivalrous; it was a man speaking out against sexism (not speaking out in defense of women or for women, but instead using his experience to make a point he believed in).  To insinuate that statement is sexism is to insinuate that all men are sexist in whatever they may say about women.  If we're really going to get past the glass ceiling and talk like "you play like a girl" the only way it's going to happen across the board is if all people make their displeasure at such talk and attitudes known.

i,d be happy to play like the Polgars, but if comments bother you, pick a unisex name.

Don't be sorry, be careful!

Well said , Hugh.

I aim all my sexist remarks at myself -- keeps me in line.  I imagine this thread rankles the chess lounge lizards . . . good!  The smell of desperation is so cloying here at times as to be overpowering.  Always good to have a breeze blow some of that testerone-laden smoke away from the website.

what ever man can do,girls can do it better!!!

I always found chess_kebabs a funny play on words and from a girl (hey wait a minute, if I say that I've defeated the whole reason I wrote this post in the first place). What I meant to say was "and from an Australian", no that insults a nation. Let's leave it at "nice play on words" )although someone could find something smarmy about that as well. Australia is my favorite country other than my own (which is looking better now that we have the world's dummes tman out of office). Chess_Kebabs, that really is a funny play on words. You should start a "play on words" posting!

You know, Erik and company has mentioned before that we should not offend people with our comments. While I am not the most politically correct person in the world, I make a point of not offending my friends here on chess.com. You know, there are a lot of women on this site who work very hard at their games and are good chess players. I don't think they would appreciate comments like "beaten by a girl," etc. I know I didn't like the comments I got from a guy who beat me. While I was tempted to rip this guy a new one, I took the high road. I didn't argue back because I don't want to be a "bad" representative of thisgreat website. Trust me, I hand out verbal use like candy on a daily basis, but never here. I respect everyone's hard work and efforts in playing chess. So let's have some respect for our female chess players here. If you lose a game, you lose to another chess player who loves the game as much as you do. You didn't get beat by a woman or "girl" (if you really want to sound twelve years old). Let's take the mature road here. I mean are you really that insecure in your masculinity? Before, you say it, I know my playing (for lack of better intellectual terms) sucks, so don't drag my poor playing into it if your going to belabor this point. CHESS LADIES RULE! This is the 21st Century. Victorian thinking went out a long time ago.

yes i too care deeply about things on the internet

No. Its proven that women are not good as men at chess. Thats why some guys don't like to be beaten by girls. Thats it. They are not sexist, jeesus, they don't claim that girls should not play chess ! Girls you have to relax here, lol:)

I think that the only "proof" that men are genetically superior in chess to women comes from biased statistics rooted in centuries when only men played.  I suppose you think that all female lawyers and doctors are inferior to their male counterparts as well.  Wake up and join the 21st Century!!

And if you're going to claim an intellectual superiority, you might want to learn how to use a spelling and grammar checker 1st.  Any male who has a problem losing to a female is obviously insecure with his own masculinity.  And anyone who feels that they should win anything based solely on their gender is by definition sexist.

Do a little research then come back with intelligent arguments, kid.. i am not longer tracking this because i guess there is no way you could have intelligent discusssion because everyone will come with what they "think"..

i give you the facts, you do what you want with it. end of discussion, i dont read anymore on that subject. everything has been said anyway ;)

Ahhh, statistics.  Well, if one is going to hang their hat on these "statistics," here would be a fact: Since there are a lot more men players than women players, then there are more bad men players than bad women players.  Ergo, one could certainly argue that men are worse chess players than women.

My only question, Laporte: Is that cave drafty?

thegab03

Ah, for the fun is only starting!

Duffer1965

I would not mind playing like a girl if that girl was Hou Yifan. But using "play like a girl" as an insult is sexist and silly.

This is an embarrassing moment for Korchnoi. Very unsportsmanlike. I'd be ashamed if I ever behaved this way. I hope it was a very bad moment for him and not a true insight into what he thinks.

Rebel_Yell987

some of yall really think that chivalry is sexist?  Then count me sexist because real men should exhibit chivalrous behavior.

And I know many girls who dominate at chess, this game doesnt really favor either gender

There isn't anything that makes women worse or better chess players than guys. This isn't exactly a physically demanding activity. A chess player is just a chess player.

Actually, statistics show that females are better chess players than males in general. This is because males usually play more sports and are thus less interested in chess than females.

I'm sorry, but that just can't be true. The top players are men. Besides Judit Polgar, The next best woman is ranked like 100th. Yes, I think women have as much potential as men, they just don't try nearly as hard to get better at probably all levels. I see about 85% males at most chess clubs, and this percentage only increases as the ratings increase. I definitley don't think that they are more interested as they are so rare. If they are better at club level, it's because it takes alot of interest for a girl to want to play chess, and if she's that interested even though she probably wasn't pushed by her parents, she ought to be quite good I guess.
