Chess is a sport:

Most Americans will argue that chess is not a sport. Some will even use dictionaries to prove their point without realising that chess is considered a sport in non-English speaking countries such as Russia.
This forum is dominated by Americans, but in eastern Europe and Russia, chess is accepted as a sport.
Whether chess is considered a sport depends on the culture discussing the matter.
I like chess
I like golf
I like bowling
I like beer
Only 2 of the above can be considered sport
In only one is beer not a performance enhancing drug.
Don't you think we have exhausted the subject? Are people arguing wether or not chess is a sport chesssportspeople or losers that can't find anything better to do with there time? Come on, give it up and go play any sport you like, including chess!

Not so. This is not a matter of culture, but one of common sense. Chess is no more a sport than any card game, any board game, or any one of a myriad activities which can be tenuously regarded as competitive eg the World Circus Championships, which were staged many years ago. Imagine trying to call high wire walking or trapeze flying sports.I hasten to add that chess is not at all tenuous in its competitive nature, but the contributer above is right. Can we not give this one a rest?
Culture affects the responses, but the primary factors are how narrowly one defines sport (i.e. as athletics), and secondarily how one understands chess competition.
For many who play chess on this site, chess is hard to distinguish from monopoly or go fish.
All games are considered a sport to include video games like Street Fighter if they play competitively like in a tournament or something
Video games are not sport and will never be anything but a waste of time. Fishing, on the other hand, is the supreme time waster and is most certainly sport, especially for anglers who adopt a no kill policy.
As someone who has done all 3 a great deal in my life I must say I see chess as a far greater waste of time than hunting/fishing .
From the nineties MTV show, "Daria":
Quinn: Mom! Dad! Guess what: I've been accepted into a really exclusive modeling class.
Quinn: [everybody silently looks at Quinn] What?
Helen: I don't think you realize that modeling is an extremely competitive activity...
Quinn: [interrupts] So's dating. If you do it right.

We need a thread where we can argue about the greatest waste of time. Chess, fishing, noxious video games?
It most definitely is a sport!
It was considered a sport on television back in 1972 (Fischer vs Spassky).
I don't see anything changing that today...🐾
