Should I improve bullet?

Honestly speaking, I don't like bullet(2-0or3-0) (also I don't like blitz but I don't like bullet more)

I often lose bullet on time-out or take mistakes in endgame.
I tend to think longer(10 or 20 sec.), then I get better position, then I lose on time.
(I think I'm very typical weak bullet player)
(it's no problem with increment, for example 5min.-10sec.)

Of course, I'm NOT saying bullet is silly.
The cause is just that my decision is slow. Nothing else is problems. The problem is inside me.

Actually bullet is not fun for me, rather, stressful.
When I lost it, I feel like beating my head.
However, if I stop playing bullet, perhaps I feel I escaped from it!
If I escape, I think I would be a loser-dog or surrender monkey.
What should I do.

I rarely play bullet, but I think, the theory behind it is, as you get so familiar with chess, you may test that familiarity through speed alone. It's like chess, by rote. So, it is far from necessary to actually play bullet games. It is the difference between actually reading a book, as opposed to just reading cliff notes about a book. If the test on the book has to be completed in one, or two minutes, then the cliff notes have value for that test.

did you say you take 10-20 seconds for a move??

someone's not doing it right.

I can easily eat up more than ten minutes for just one insignificant move, that's the beauty of chess. On the other hand I like playing bullet every once in a while. Then such filler moves tend to be less profound.

I think I was a little paranoiash about losing.
Well, I'd like to strengthen my weak points slowly, slowly.
Thanks for your comments.

If you don't like bullet, it's probably not worth bothering to improve it.

I think bullet won't help you much in improving your slow chess, but it does improve your blitz game. I used to be a horrible blitz player, I could not win even against the weakest players in my club (who are weaker than me in slow chess!). I was just too slow. Since I started to play bullet as well, my blitz has significantly improved (because 5 minutes now seem much longer to me now than before I knew bullet :). I'm still not a very good player in the fast disciplines, I love slow chess much more, but at least now I can blitz a few games with players of my club class and win some of them ;)

All that a 1 second increment does it gives you the time to make the moves physically instead of having to premove like crazy. I find that it is physically impossible to make a move (without any thinking whatsoever involved) in less than 1 second if you are not premoving.

Yes, me too.

if it irritates you, don't play it!

this is why you will almost NEVER find me in such a short game.

I prefer slow games, too, just to enjoy the play.  I like your example of reading books, trysts, because that is the way I feel.  I had a man tell me once that he could read a novel I was reading in a few hours.  I don't read novels to time myself, because I like to get into the story and live it by seeing in my mind all of the details.  The same with chess games.  I like to check out all of the possibilities as much as possible.  That is why I enjoy playing with a friend of mine, because we use no time limits and take as much time as we need to move.  Yes, we are both very patient, but we do have fun.  Besides, if he takes a lot of time that just gives me more time to calculate my next move.

It does, doesn't it?  I've noticed that some people don't read every thread. (Shocking, isn't it?)

As an aside, I consider 1 0 to be bullet chess. I know that 2 0 and 2 1 are officially bullet chess, but especially on this site it's no longer bullet. When players have nearly 7 minutes to complete the game, it's no longer bullet. If the game lasts more than 6 minutes, the bullets lose their velocity and fall out of the air.

On [REMOVED BY STAFF], even 0 4 is considered bullet. I used that to my advantage, to get a lightning rating of 2440. Back in 1998. In fact, when I started playing internet chess, in 1993, I could still beat Nakamura.

Yes, doing things slowly, and being enveloped in the moment is much more romantic...in chessWink

I tend to be pretty fast at that.

Anyway, remember that we were in negotiations about a game ?
