Should I just give up chess forever?

I just get so mad when I lose. I mean naturally, it's only natural to lose every now and then but it drives me crazy. I just want to end it - Chess is really making me hate many aspects of my life but at the same time I'm so addicted to coming home from school, and playing bullet for hours upon hours. I just hate the game so much but I'm addicted. It's making me such an unhappy person. I don't see my family as much anymore, I don't talk to people, I don't have any friends, I have nothing. The game makes me feel to empty and alone - I hate it.

It's just chess means a lot to me, I wanted to see what my fellow chess players have to say

Addiction is destructive and it comes in many forms and if you continue this way you will be destined to live a very lonely life. Good luck to you.

You really need to focus on longer time controls.  Your addiction to bullet is not only unhealthy for your improvment, but also you mental health.

I recomend take a break from playing chess for a bit.  You can play a few long games a day but focus on your life.  After a few weeks you can come back.  Play longer time controls and some bullet on weekends ect.  It would be great if you could play chess sociably.  Chess clubs ect.

Well, that is the advice I would give to you.  If you are blowing this out of porportion and exaggerating, stop bitching.

The problem with chess is that you keep playing it WAY after you give it up forever...

The story of SO MANY players - probably close to all of them.

Don't give up. If you love the game then you'll learn and lose less! Perhaps studying some great chess books might help you. Lasker's Chess Strategy is a great read and has helped my game. You could also do chess puzzles and download Lucas Chess. Lucas Chess is a full-fledged chess program that is open source with many features comparable to paid only software (like personalities, in-depth analysis (like a tutor), chess puzzles, a pgn reader, an opening trainer, among other features).

You've made a significant and stark list of the negatives of chess. What positives does it bring to your life? Alleviation of withdrawal symptoms don't count, either. Make a list of those as well. Compare the lists, and the right decision will be obvious. Those negatives will lessen with time away, as well, so it needn't be permanent. You just need time.

I'm in the same boat. Have done all the lessons thousands of tactical situations and I get ambushed in every game. I'm so terrible and I made it a point to learn this dumb game butt I just don't know what to do to improve

Totally me ready to quit

i think taking a break and playing in moderation would be best. Don't let it take over you. I have at times battled the addictive nature this game has on me, especially after losing a couple blitz games in a row.

Stop playing on a computer at least. If you have a local chess club that is affordable, play some flesh and blood people and actually talk to them.Don't just find some other reason to stare at a computer screen or a cell phone.

That doesn't guarantee happiness. You may have plenty of psychological difficulties that have nothing to do with chess. Schools have guidance counsellors, can give referrals to psychotherapists.

My post don't show up

I find it more relaxing to just work the chess puzzle and to play vote chess.  That way chess is just a momentary diversion instead of something that drags you under.

With any addiction, it doesn't change if you don't replace part of it by something new. Try and do something else first when you come home from school, like spending time with family or going for a walk. Do something you would have liked to do but maybe weren't trying yet, just to see what that's like. Then later, when it is easier to control the amount of time you spend, play chess! Hope this helps...

Read the quotes below and think about that.

Chess is a matter of vanity. Alexander Alekhine

Chess is not relaxing ; it's stressful even if you win. Jennifer Shahade

Chess is not for the faint-hearted; it absorbs a person entirely. To get to the bottom of this game, he has to give himself up into slavery. Chess is difficult, it demands work, serious reflection and zealous research. Wilhelm Steinitz

Chess is mental torture. Garry Kasparov

Chess is a sport; a violent sport. – Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968)

Chess players are madmen of a certain quality, the way the artist is supposed to be, and isn’t, in general. – Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968)

I am still a victim of chess. It has all the beauty of art – and much more. It cannot be commercialized. Chess is much purer than art in its social position. – Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968)

How many chess addicts does it take to change a light-bulb? Answer: they won't change it, they will play blindfold. MarcoBR444.
