Should I keep playing chess?

It seems like your only real problem with continuing to play chess is your tendency to over-do it -- to the detriment of your other activities (mostly obviously your school work).  As others have suggested, at this point in your life it's probably more important for you to focus on your education, mostly because education is much more likely to affect your later life in immediate, practical and enduring ways. However, even at this point in time, you may well wonder what you might learn from your involvement with chess over the past months.  Perhaps chess is life's way of teaching you how to become (probably as years pass) more balanced and less addictive in your pursuits -- certainly an invaluable life-lesson to learn -- especially at such a young age (seemingly).  Good luck with whatever you decide.

A break might be good for your chess developement anyways.

A break from being a bullshit envoy sure...

Speaking of envoys, I'm thinking you might actually be Darth Vader. He was pretty rude too and had confirmed trust issues.

To the OP, my vote is also on a break and taking a step back for a while to get a healthy perspective on things. Oh and chasing girls.

Do what makes you happy. You only live once. There may be other things in your life you'll want to do though and school may help with that. But if want to be a chess grandmaster, frig it all and do your thang.

We get bums like the BS-Envoy around here all the time making ridiculous unsubstantiated claims. Some are pretty harmless and all they want is attention, but occasionally some kid will chance his arm and try to hoodwink some gullible patzer into paying for coaching services.

Btw, for all FIDE's failings they do have a pretty comprehensive rating search feature so it's pretty easy to establish the OP is talking through his ass.

Oh, my bad, I didn't know that, then I can understand the suspicion. I'm just used to (unsubstantiated) conspiracy theories galore and rude stuff from other forums.

OP is not totally honest of course, but the character isn't hard to impersonate for an adult, so I'm guessing it is a kid of some age.

You should quit chess for now; you're obviously a talented player and that will never leave you. Your rating is not however exceptional enough to justify you playing chess to the exclusion of everything else. If you were a GM already, I'd say go for it.

My best advice to you would be to concentrate on school. And at lunch times, hustle the other kids out of their dinner money by challenging them to games of chess. Seriously though, you're just a kid; enjoy you're childhood, chase some girls, get into trouble now and again. You have the rest of your life to play chess.

So who becomes a GM after six months of playing chess?

Who becomes 1920 FIDE after six months of playing chess?

 The OP said he did.

You want a serious answer from someone who has been playing tournament chess off and on since 1973? Here it is - quit playing. Chess is a waste of time. Its addictive, and if you are already compulsive and intense (I think you are) it will have a negative effect on you. Take the time you will devote to chess and do something productive and self-enhancing.

So I wasted my life so far...

Yeah your bad, too right your bad. The whole thing, the whole topic. Get out you joker and don't lie to people.

LOL, I would never had apologized had I known it would make you angry. My bad, ;) now breathe deep and relax.

Edit: I missed your correction, you had me a bit confused there mate... Laughing

JG27Pyth

A US 14 year old 1920 FIDE rating. And in four tournaments in the span of three or four months last year. How perfectly amazing. Neat. No such player exists, but don't let that trouble you.

So you hadn't met him before you lost to him?  So your claim that he didn't even know how the pieces moved less than 2 years ago is hearsay.

Looking at the rise of star players (who are currently in the top 100 in the world) no one gets that good that fast.  Only in embellished stories do people progress that quickly.  Sure provisional ratings can be 2500, but just as sure that player has played chess before those few tournaments.

Twobit

The question is if this is OTB rating or not.

mateologist

They watch the Magnus C. episode and now this is what you get, late blooming child prodigys , with the only thing standing between them and a GM title is HOMEWORK !   Cool    lol

Conflagration_Planet

I don't know about chess, but I can guarantee you're the only 14 year old on earth born in 1990!

you'll be suprised how fast someone can learn chess...

I know a kid who started (i insist on started, he didn't knew the game before) playing at late 9, he got hooked and he have early 11 now and he his at 2200 rating, playing rather well against GM, IM and fide master. and he won a young world tournament in bresil. all that in less then 2 years! how do I know that? I lost to that guy (yes I said I lost to a 11 years old boy in public...) so I was willing to understand him a bit.

2 years is four times longer than 6 months. No-one is denying that such a rate of improvement is possible, just highly highly unlikely.

As uhohspaghettio alluded to, some aspects of his story just don't add up. As JG27Pyth mentioned, there are no 14 year old American players with a FIDE rating of 1920. Of the 14 year olds with a FIDE rating in the 1900-2000 range, most of them got their first rating well over 6 months ago, and those who didn't have a USCF rating for a number of years.

It's bullshit, pure and simple.
