I guess we won't have Tricky Babs to kick around any more.

The way I see it is if you want to play chess with over the board rules then go play over the board tournaments and club chess.

If you play correspondence chess then you follow them rules ...

You can't come into a chess site saying that "I believe that using a database in the opening of a normal game is cheating"

Just my thoughts on this

Eventually there will be no uncharted waters. Everything will be in a database.

Probably at Gonnosuke's house.

Correspondence players add to opening theory because both players are able to slowly analyze positions that are too complex to analyze easily OTB. Theory must progress faster when novelties are answered after research and analysis rather than when sprung in an OTB game.

For those of us who are not going to add to opening theory with our moves, we can either flail around looking for the right answer and then look up the line after the game, or look the line up during the game. I feel that the latter approach lets me learn a lot more.

To continue the academic analogy, I don't think that a CC game is like an open book test. It's more like a research project, the goal of which, of course, is not just to put a paper/presentation/whatever together, but to learn something along the way. Then again, in neither an exam or research project is there an opponent on the other side trying to mess me up.

You and I obviously didn't have the same college professors.

Just to expand on what Ziryab replied:

Allowing members to pick and choose which games they play in OTB/unassisted/real-time mode and which they play in CC/research/offline mode raises issues:

1. assuming both types of games are RATED, the ratings pool will need to be partitioned; otherwise it will contain incompatible values.

2. if anyone is playing some CC/research/offline games AT THE SAME TIME as playing OTB/unassisted/real-time games, there will still be potential leakage of information from the former to the latter.

ROFL... seriously, I "don't wanna' waste my life..." especially seeing that I come back to this thread and THREE new pages are added in one day... LOL!

No.

This is not a thread about you chess_kebabs. Take this to your fan club.

blackfirestorm

Well no because this thread will then either get deleted as so many threads do or it will get locked

If I am a cheat because I use a database during the opening then so is the vast majority of the site ...

OOOPS just remembered something ...

You MAY use books, magazines, or other articles. You may also use Game databases which do not include computer analysis (including Chess.com's Game Explorer) for the Online (correspondence) Chess only.
