Skiving

My boss came in to my office the other day, all huff and puff and unreasonable demand. I, unsurprisingly, was playing chess. Now, I have a highly attuned sense of the approach of my boss, like a small fish detecting the approach of a shark and taking evasive action. I smugly minimised the webpage, intending to reveal the complex spreadsheet behind full of facts and figures pertaining to company fiscal performance. Much to my horror, the computer, at that moment, decided to crash, rendering the screen immobile with a current game displayed for all to see. My boss enters the office, gruffly asks “enjoying your game?”, dumps some paperwork on my desk and leaves without a word.

Does anyone else skive at work to play chess? Have you been caught?

Absolutely, and yes I've been caught.

Thankfully my place of work is highly results oriented, as am I.

Lots of chess players on this site play at work and there for becomes professionals as they get paid for it, I even suggest them to ask their bosses to sponsor their membership on chess.com as they for sure are proud of having professionals  players in their company.Innocent

It is the fault of short-sighted policies- in America we think that increasing work time should increase work done, leading to long, unproductive hours as workers drastically lose efficiency.

Oh wait you're from England. I guess you're just a slacker then.

I haven't checked, but maybe there is some API to interact with chess.com in a way that you can have a little window to enter moves and view moves in algebraic notation. That way your boss won't tell immediately you are playing chess and you become better playing blindfold. ;)

That would be good, but I'm still holding out for the brain implant.

Lol. Your boss doesn't sound so bad, Errant.

And yes I do play at work, only during breaks offcourse Innocent

Where I used to work everyone knew I played even the President, no big deal as long as the prescribed work got done they didn't care. But now I have Kohai's boss breathing down my neck! ;-)

Yes and yes. But I'm retired and only work 3 mornings a week. What are they going to do? Fire me?

I don't own a computer. Everything I have done on this site has been me exhibiting my ability to be work shy. Funnily, I work on a ropey old slag of a computer and often have to worry about being frozen and busted.

What about being in the zone? I've sometimes got all caught up in a game and completely forgot to have the survival/alert part of my brain on, some real close calls.

My father was completely addicted to chess.com  He used to stay up all night playing against friends from all over Wales.  It began to affect his work so he started taking speed to fuel his wakefullness.  When I found out I confiscated his entire stash.

A few days later he died peacefully in his sleep.

Unlike the screaming passengers on his bus.
