As an intolerant ex-smoker, I don't want to be exposed to smoke in any public place, not just while eating. It leaves a horrible smell on my clothes. Smoking has been banned in the UK from all enclosed public venues though people can still smoke outdoors. If someone wants to smoke in their own house or car, that's fine as long as they aren't harming anyone else.

The problem with being allowed to smoke in your own house or car is that people have children in their homes and it has been shown that second hand smoke is harmful to children. That is why I would like tobacco to be outlawed worldwide, to save the children.

As a smoker all my teen and adult life and now 62 hooked up to oxygen, choking and cant walk without a breathing treatment across my house I say keep smoking.Ever tried hitting a golf ball with a tank on your back.Ever tried to enjoy your only pleasure of sitting down to a game of chess only to be interrupted by a ambulance call.Recently I had my first invite here to a tourny.Admittingly outclassed but was looking forward to the experience.Lost most games due to time as I was in the hospital due to COPD and Empheysema.I didnt have access to vacation time click so dont ask.It wasnt losing on time that bothered me as much as not being able to play.Im now 5 months free and somewhat better. So smoke em if you got em.See you on the links er board.

Yes indeed - hence my qualifier "as long as they aren't harming anyone else". Second hand smoke has also been shown to be harmful to adults, I believe (e.g. Steenland et al.), but at least adults can make informed decisions about whether to accept that risk.

I frequently play chess with someone who is addicted to cigerettes and they feel that they concentrate better if they're puffing a butt.  It pisses me off because I hate ciggerettes very much and to have someone smoke one tw ofeet in front of me not only makes me feel crappy it destroys my concentration.  If I were Nimzovich I wolud've punched Tal in the face.  Smoking ciggerettes is for the weak in spirit and those who lack conviction.

I used to play chess in the park and people would stand around smoking cigarettes and blowing smoke in my face. Very annoying and they weren't even playing. Since that time, here in NYC, cigarette smoking has been outlawed in public parks, I personally don't like Mayor Bloomberg but at least he did one thing right! Now I play in the public library where we have a small chess club and of course smoking is not allowed, thanks to the librarians.

yeah, all motorized traffic should be banned as well..... FOR THE CHILDREN

Honestly you live in a place like ny and you are worrying about cigarette smoke??? Have you ever considered what the air quality is like in a metropolitan city.... I can tell you it's shit

The Mark Twain quote I'm familiar with is:

"To quit smoking is the easiest thing I ever did, I should know because I've done it a thousand times."

For those of you who don't know in some parts of the world when someone blows smoke in your face it means they want to sleep with you.  And I doubt anyone who claims smoking is for those who are weak in spirit or lack conviction ever served in the military.

The change around in attitudes to smoking is quite extraordinary.  And seems to have happened so fast.  In my view some societies have gone too far in outlawing smoking; in the UK it is unlawful to smoke in a private club whatever the members think.  I believe the argument in favour is that the staff should be protected from cigarette smoke in their workplace.

But people have a measure of choice about where they work as with where they go to eat.  There are plenty of restaurants which voluntarily operate a no smoking policy.

I don't smoke myself but we are, it seems to me, almost persecuting those who do and it does not sit entirely comfortably with me.

There was a similar turn around (in the UK) about drink driving.  So much so that the maximumj sentence for causing death by dangerous driving had to be increased.  With that change I heartily concur.

I agree with you on all counts. There's nothing I can do about motorized traffic. But at least I can  stop people from blowing smoke in my face.

There were a few ladies I was pleased to have blowing smoke in my face.

All those additives in commercial cigarettes are why I rolled my own, and then switched to a pipe.

Still quit, though.

Back in the 1950s, the tobacco companies hired a bunch of nuclear scientists to say that their experiments found no link between cigarrette smoking and various health problems (that 1930s German scientists had linked to tobacco). Many of those scientists went on to work for companies producing acid rain, and they again found no harmful effects. They then became the leaders in the global warming skepticism movement.

Creationists tried to hire them too, but 1) they could not afford the salaries, and 2) there are some things that even corrupt scientists will not say.

The problem comes from the ill effects of smoking. There are stories of people getting lung cancer just from living around smokers. And the second-hand smoke issue is a huge concern as well.

So if you want to smoke 300 deadly chemicals because it makes you feel good then that is your right. But you have no right to project that crap at me. Screw with your own lungs not mine.

And anyone who says that passive smoking is not harmful - when I was 13 I had cigar smoke blown in my face at a chess club: it left me with a very sore throat each week for TWO WHOLE DAYS.

THAT is the only study that I need to see.

My mother died of lung cancer even tho she never smoked a cigarette in her life, my father was a chain smoker. He died of a stroke years later. Doctors today have published studies showing exposure to second hand smoke is very bad, especially for children. I have no objection if you want to kill yourself, just use a gun or cyanide or something that won't hurt me, in short, don't blow your stinking smoke in my face!

_IronButterfly_

Glad to see this subject.  I heard my mother in law say for 28 yrs.  " 1% tar 1% nicotine, the lowest of all cigerettes I smoke!", every time someone one told her to stop.

Twenty-eight years later, age 84, she had her leg cut off due to no circulation, mostly from the cigs damaging the blood vessels.  It may not be cancer, but she stil will pay for it the rest of her life.

OH and by the way,for you smokers who read this...there are over 3000 chemicals added to those cigs due to all the rodents who climb up on the conveyor belts that carries the tobacco and gets mixed in with the tobacco. Cyanide is one of the chemicals they add.  Enough said.

Quality is indeed important.

I agree we should shield the children from the harmful issues.
