Lothar Schmid became an IM in 1951 and a GM and GMC in 1959. He was the head arbiter in several WCHs inc Fischer-Spassky 1972. He played for W Germany in 11 Olympiads, winning 4 silver medals and 2 bronze team medals. He owned the largest private chess library in the world with +50,000 volumes ranging from original publications by Lucena in 1497 to contemporary chess newsletters from the Phillipines.
