Steady Decline in Skill

I have been experiencing a steady decline in skill level over the past two years. On another account I got up to 2k rating in bullet, but was normally around 1950.  On this account I have not even been rated over 1700. I have not been studying chess, but have been busy with 3 internships, work, and graduate school. I have played speed chess every now and again to pass the time and my rating has dropped a full 600 points. I feel pathetic and am incredibly disapointed in myself. What can I do to get back to where I was? Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this?

play slower

Blitz is a different game. Chess reflexes count for as much as chess knowledge. Taking time off from the game will blunt your reflexes, without degrading your knowledge-based skills. Try a few games with longer time controls (eg: three days per move) before you decide that your chess skills are declining.

play slower (edit) and think about your moves for a few more minutes, visualise the whole board carefully get your mind back "wired" for your eye chess.

Of course I am rated sub 1000 so I cant relate to the issue exactly but you say you are playing speed chess.

I was playing very well, so one day I began to learn more tactics, strategy, I bought a pair of books, watched a lot of videos, and my understanding of chess grew a lot… suddenly, I began to make big blunders, forgot pieces, lose on time like never before. I left chess for a while in order to calm down my bunch of errors. Maybe I was over trained.

I that Emu said was like what i wanted to say except he said it more cogently.

It's quite common for your over-the-board results to drop temporarily after you've learned some new material. You need to play some more games in order to assimilate the new ideas.

Well, 600 points is an awfully hellacious drop...but then again, bullet is bullet.  I'm not sure that can really be compared with "real chess."

Do you start another a/c whenever you have screwed the previous one up?

Its true. We got to give us a time after a hard training. We got to play no matter if we lose. This is the only way.

I presume that he got his 2000 bullet rating back when bullet ratings were more inflated compared to what they are now; 2000 in that system is roughly equivalent to 1700 in this one, even though they're 300 points different. As for the other 300 points, I'm sorry, but I don't know how to explain that.

Runsledale

The topic title is misleading.
