Struggling to achieve 1800 rating.

Bear down and study, practice, and play.  Very simple, and less keystrokes.

Both of these are taken from one of your games. B

No they are not! Your ratings perfectly reflect your results.

hey buddy watch your tone dont be arrogant here. you have no odea what ur talking about. my ratings are inaccurate as i staed here when i was very young, and now i mainly face the engine. so dont talk about things that you havent a clube about.

If this game is a reflection of your ability, then your ratings here are accurate.

Try not sucking at chess? Learn from the tactical mistakes made in your games? Accept that your rating is accurate?

hey why am i getting all these arrogant replies here. r u jealous of a mearly 1700 rating? i have taken multiple elo tests as well with upwards of 70 questions, and i have received over 1800 ratings. so please keep quet about the things u dont know about. i know for a fact i am at a 1700 level, and now im working for an 1800 rating. if the only thing u can do is bash what i say pls dont bother commenting here.

Those tests are all garbage, made to intentionally add many hundred points so that gullible people who need a good ego-stroking keep posting about them over and over again.

I did one and it told me I was 1944. They're a complete joke. null

So this 1700 rating you claim to have is only based on beating a computer set to that level? That doesn't mean anything. Ratings are not a measure of chess skill, simply a number that reflects your results. Your ratings seem very accurate considering the number of games played this year, I don't see how your age when you started has anything to do with it even though you keep repeating this point.

Convincing yourself of this fantasy that you're a 1700 player struggling to break into 1800 when you're 1400 is a real effective way to hurt your progress.

And i read a book on how to perform brain surgery. so im a surgeon!

Taking tests isnt a substitute for experience.  If you have never played rated OTB games, you are not a 1700-1800 player.  I have beaten NM's, but that doesnt make me a NM.  I beat a GM in a simul. and that too doesnt make me a GM.

Another piece of advice would be, to be humble.

Self-Esteem issues.

Inflated view on yourself.

Anger issues.

Chess may not be for you.

If I scream at the top of my lungs that I am 6'3" even though everyone can see I am 5'5", should I just keep screaming louder until people give up?

Nobody here is "bashing you", only trying to wake you from your delusions. You don't get to call people every nasty word you know about and then spin around and pretend like you're some victim. The only one being nasty here is you.

You asked for advice and you got it.

lol this is why chess.com forums are the best

Cherub_Enjel

BTW - if indeed you have not played OTB games, and you're 1700 based on engine play, then I wouldn't recommend studying tactics too much - they won't help you beat the engine anyways wink.png

Instead I'd just focus on checking for safety in tactics, and learning to play closed, more quiet positions, but not so much learning how to calculate deeply, or search for forcing moves.

That's the advice if you're trying to get a better rating vs. the engine.

I think both aggressivesociopath and Bobbytalporov are right. Well IMbacon is right too. OK, pretty much everyone is right. Even good advice isn't going to do much good if you dont have a realistic understanding of where you are starting from. If the goal is to get to 1800, which is just a silly number, much of the advice is the same if you are starting from 700 or 1700. You may have been misled into believing you are at a 1700 level. Accept that maybe you are starting at 1400 or 1500 and want to get to 1800. It will be easier than if you falsely believe you are starting at 1700. I think that just like any other goal or endeavour, a lesser talented or skilled person will need more (or at least different) things than someone more advanced to get to that next level. If you believe you are 1700 you may not be willing to learn the necessary things to get to 1800, whereas someone who realistically understands he is a 1400 is eager and willing to learn the basics a 1700 probably already knows.

Cherub_Enjel

Yeah, it's funny since I thought I was like 1600+ before my first OTB tournament, and I didn't even hit 1300 lol.

Pawnlings

The difference between 1700 and 1800 is in large part tactics and not attacking until your position is better than your opponents. Don't over extend and attack if the position doesn't call for it.

IMBacon and BobbyTalparov are right. Your ratings say you're 1400, your games say you're 1400, therefore you are 1400. I got 1956 on the Elometer test, yet my Rapid rating (based exclusively on 90 30) is 1563.

aggressivesociopath

That was a blitz game, but it shows what you have to learn not to do to reach 1800.
