study plan for blitz

I have found that not playing it while drunk is a good plan.

I think i have found what i'm looking for from other sources, but firstly i think i must explain why i am more interested in Blitz then slow chess.

  • I am a busy professional French horn player so i don't have a lot of spare time to play slow chess at a club as i cannot commit every week. It's easier for me to play from home. I also spend a lot of my time on tour so it's easier to open the  laptop and play blitz when i have time.
  • Nobody seems to want to play slow chess online,
  • I find Blitz is more fun.

Everyone seems obsessed with slow chess on these forums, yet  90% of people play blitz on this site.

Anyway, i have been informed  that i must

  1. practice Tactical Motifs until i get blisters on my fingers. Hours and hours until the patterns are burnt in your brain.
  2. Practice basic endgame scenarios with and engine until you can play them   instantaneously. ( He mentioned  Silmans Complete endgame Course).

He also recommended this book AFTER i'm competent at points 1&2

A Chess Opening Repertoire for Blitz & Rapid: Sharp, Surprising and Forcing Lines for Black and White by and White by Gm Evgeny Sveshnikov

His final advice was to never resign!  It does not matter how little material you have on the board if your opponents clock runs out.

Yes I have Considered that.......And  i don't care about my rating (700) or your rating (500) for that matter.....i just want to play for fun and improve.

Practice @Game in 30/5.  Study tactics (John Littlewood, 1984) and a basic endgame book (there are many to choose from).

If you can't reach 1200+ rating in Game in 5/5, it's too fast for you, currently.

There's a non-trivial body of knowledge you must imbibe and know cold before you will improve.  So "get with the program."

P.S. CC speeds will not likely improve your blitz playing strength.  You don't have enough basic tactical and endgame knowledge, yet.

If you just want "thrills and entertainment," then keep on your present course.

End of Story.
