Suicide over Chess? Why?

This is entirely true. He was not politically correct and therefore crazy!

If so, Fischer started young. From an early age his mother, friends, and teachers were concerned about his mental health.

Fischer didn't get into trouble from his political incorrectness, but from his actions -- playing for a $5,000,000 purse in a country the US government had declared out of bounds to Americans.

I am sorry to learn that DrRalph124C -- he of the marvelous username -- should fall into this camp of Fischer apologetics.

Apparently US still believes it owns its citizens. One thing for sure, Fischer had balls.

Everyone does.

Mental illness is not well-defined and we can go around this mulberry bush forever. However, it does not speak well for Fischer's mental health that most of those close to him were concerned about his mental health.

My main point in this sub-thread has been to oppose the argument "No, Fischer wasn't mentally ill, but if he acted that way it was because he was persecuted by the US government."

RonaldJosephCote

Fisher wasn't "persecuted" by the US government. They simply wanted the taxes paid on his winnings. He "choose" to break the law and not pay. There are countless examples of people trying to play chess with the US government. Ruby Ridge, Waco, Tim Mcveigh, etc. You'll lose every time. He won $3 million dollars. If he had given the government $1, he could of come home with $2 million, and they would of given him a ticker tape parade.

RonaldJosephCote

The spitting moment occured much later in his life. Not to mention his comments after 911.

RonaldJosephCote

So your saying television history is more important than depression or following the laws?

RonaldJosephCote

I for one am perfectly happy that even in death, he got no respect. He refused a patenity test and it was done on him post mortem. He was a spoiled little immature kid who didn't play well with others and wanted his own way in everything in life. Life just doesn't work that way, but that's just my opinion.

I know you guys are hell bent on badmouthing the guy so I'm not continuing here. It's soporific you think the tax thing is equivalent to bombing etc. Tax is just an administrative detail and his situation was common at the time. It says a lot that you try to do it. I suppose all the corporations that are not paying tax are bombers and murderers to you, or does it just apply to Fischer?

RonaldJosephCote

Since were speaking about mental illness lets take a look at the timeline shall we?  1st, he refused to pay the tax, then yrs later he publicly referred to 911 as "a good thing".  Mental illness progresses, just like chess. 1st you have thoughts on harming people, then you act on those thoughts. Who do you know that also refers to 911 as "a good thing" What kind of sick puppies are YOU associating with??  That's why I said to BB_Gum "REALLY?"  You have NO idea what mental illness IS?  HERE'S A CLUE!Undecided  IF your wishing harm onto other people, plants, or animals, that have done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to you;   "YOU MIGHT BE A MENTAL PERSON"!!Yell   If you call people names in a chess forum just because you disagree with them; "YOU MIGHT BE A MENTAL PATIENT!!Yell  If you have a habit of inflaming a thread with your post or your avatar; "YOU MGHT BE A MENTAL PATIENT"!!Yell   If you've NEVER apologized on chess.com;  "YOU MIGHT BE A MENTAL PATIENT"!!                   "I suppose all the corporations that are not paying tax are bombers and murderers to you"         Your saposing, and assuming, but your not MAKING a disctinction between the two. When you do a lot of saposing and assuming;  YOU MIGHT BE A MENTAL PATIENT!

Lycine, ISee: Good grief.

Fischer was as joyous as Bin Laden that his own country had been attacked on 9-11 and over three thousand civilians had been murdered.

That doesn't make him mentally ill, but it's still hateful. To whatever extent you buy into that attitude, it makes you hateful too.

I did ponder when these types of insinuations would start. ;)

How about you look for a moment at your outburst and your chosen forum icon, a puppet from a children's show?

RonaldJosephCote

To those of you that are experts on mental illness, how about the Colorado Movie Shooter?  Was he mental, or a nice guyUndecided  And speaking of suicide, in a Texas jail yesterday, a female killed herself. At least that's what CNN is saying. Was she pushed or did she jump?  We may not know for weeks.

RonaldJosephCote

I've had better outburst than this. You've been here for 3 months. I've been using the same avatar for 3 yrs. We're expected to believe that your from Vatican City? I'm just amazed that some of you people are SOooo sick, you wouldn't know mental illness if it jumped up and bit you in the ass.Surprised

Lycine

When he made those comments he was being pursued by the US government. The persecution part had long begun. If you weren't allowed to live in places because the government was out to get you, then you would feel the same way.

Lycine

And that can happen anywhere. It's a point against governments.

Joseph_Truelson

One thing for sure.... Fischer doesn't deserve your defense

RonaldJosephCote

I give upCry  There WAS NO persecution. (except in his mind). It was a tax bill. He lived for 20 yrs in New York. Then he lived for 20 yrs on the west coast. The government didn't bother him at either location. He was over 40 when he left the country of his own free will. If he had come back, he could have lived anywhere he could afford too. Driven any car he could afford too, gotten any job that he qualified for, used the libraries, parks, and postal system, etc. HOWEVER;  if he inherited anything of value, the IRS would of put a lean on it--i.e. property, bank accounts, jewelry, paintings. People are in bankrupcy everyday in this country. I have a student loan that's in default. There is ONLY one way I can get that cleared, and that is to PAY IT!  I'll be MORE than happy to when I have the money. Nobody wants to be raked over the coals, but the Government is willing to work with people on payments.

RonaldJosephCote

There's plenty of people who think the government is after them. The church is after them. Aliens are after them. There was a thread here a couple of weeks ago about a guy who wanted to know why he should go on in life. The thread got into Scientology and was eventually deleted by staff. Here's the universal question that most if not all psychiatrist will give pertaining to mental health;  "If you had 3 wishes, what would you wish for?"   There's only 1 correct answer, and most young people always answer with the 3 most typical vices. Money, sex, and drugs.
