No. Cheapskates always rationalize.

I'm a beginner, and I am also non-paying, and I understand completely that chess.com is giving me a teaser to encourage me to pay for a premium membership.  Frankly, as a non-paying member I am grateful for whatever I can have.  If I had access to more tactics problems, I think it would simply mean that I would have less incentive to upgrade.  It does cost money to run a site like this, and I think we should all accept that reality.

Tactics improvement comes in years. Yes, years of practice.

About # if problems per day, well, good things are never free. In my opinion TT is the bigest incentive for buying a gold membership.

>>And ChessStrategist, I don't see the problem with rationalization.<<

That's because you don't comprehend the word. It doesn't mean being rational. It means using nonsense that you think is rational. It means the exact opposite of what you think it means.

Being cheap, self-centered and stupid is a bad, bad combination...if you ever want to attract women.

You also forgot to mention that you are a jerk and a know it all dispensing advice that will be largely ignored because of the tone in which it is delivered and  that you usually have no idea what you are talking about.

Being rude, stubborn, insulting, and a bad speller is a bad way to attract women.

Indeed.

Wow,

I never would have expected chess.com to be like all the other online forums out there: a breeding ground for trolls. *sigh*

First off I don't think this is the negative rationalism chessStratigist is talking about, just a thought that attracting more traffic to the site would increase the number of memberships.  Makes plenty of sense to me.  In my opinion 5 a day would be an ideal balance.  A small enough number that I would certainly buy the membership to get more, but not so little that you can't get any benefit from it.

I think the rating system for tactics trainer should become more like the player rating system in games in that the more problems you do the less the variability is.  Every day I do problems I fluctuate from around 1150-1350 so it's hard to see short term progress

I'm not sure this exactly fits in this thread but here goes: It is certainly proper to use chess.com for free. I will, however, say that I certainly do not mind paying my annual fee. The enjoyment I get out of using all the options makes it one of the best bargains I've come across.
