Even though it makes me want to toss my laptop through the wall, the trainer is a good tool IMO. I'm not a big fan of being timed, that's my biggest problem... and trust me it translates onto the board. So it's not a bad idea, especialy for people like me to use the trainer, mainly because it forces me to deal with the time pressure and make the proper move. I have noticed that I'm better at seeing a checkmate than I am a simple taking of another apponents piece. It quickly showed me that I need to learn beginning to middle game. The old KISS method, keep it simple stupid. lol
Tactics trainer

Hi,
I think TT is great, just signed up with chess.com and really enjoy the site.
Can someone explain how TT arrives at scores? Here's an example of my confusion. Notice the last entry. 'passed' with a -5 score. Third down 'passed' in less time than the average and -3. Sorry for the giant sized image.
Marc

I believe the tactic trainer is very unaccurate. Most people i know is about 200 higher rated in the tactic trainer than they are OTB rating, or live chess rating.

I guess you are to slow.
Tactics trainer ratings are completely inaccurate. Theres this random 1800 guy with a tactics trainer rating of 3500.
Also, theres this guy with rating 1000 with 3400 in tactics trainer.

That doesn't necessarily mean the tactics trainer ratings are innacurate in all cases. It just means that particular person is likely using an engine to solve the puzzles for him.
I find my rating varies a lot over time. I've slumped to the 1400s from the 1600s and was wondering whether my chess ability had declined terminably through senility - or can I blame it all on the algorithms in the system?

tactic trainer rating is not rating. the only rated is your ability to solve tactic.
and in games you don't solve tactics all the time.
you may be the world best to solve tactic but if you do not know opening, strategy and doesn't know what to do if no tactic is there or hang pieces you will not have a high rating.

Do you guys think the tactics trainer in this site is accurate? I mean, I'm a 1600 player and I got 1800 points. Maybe my strongest asset is tactics, but I don't really know. What do you think?
I have no idea if it's accurate. I know I'm seeing patterns in Tactics Trainer and games as my Tactics rating rose to 1600. I also know the tactics for 1600 are harder at chesstempo.com than at chess.com, but you get penalized 9 points for a mistake here so you have to get a very high percentage right to progress. But you shouldn't see easy mate in 1's at 1600, tactics.
In any case, the rating is iffy but improving in rating means you're improving in tactics. I spend at least 1/2 hours each day split between here and chesstempo.

TT ratings on this site are not accurate - I can easily go 2500+ normally, and 2600+ if I happen to get a lot of duplicates. My tactics are OK for my level, not incredibly high or anything - I know that from my peers.
But the fact that there are 4000 rated TT players should tell you it's horribly inaccurate.

No, not really.
(I'm sure there've been other threads on the same query)

The tactics trainer is not accurate because it doesn't give part credit for moves that are winning but not in the fastest possible way....you get the same score for an alternate winning move and a completely crappy move....I'm one those rare anomalies who has a tactics score well below what my OTB and rapid/blitz ratings are... but I stink at bullet...guess I'm a calculator and not an intuitive player which is what I hear the bullet players are.
