The Username should not be the display name.

Nobody is looking into hacking your chess.com account unless it's for fun/prank or they have a grudge against you... There's nothing to gain.
What you SHOULD be concerned with - is a hacker somehow accessing the site database which contains all of our account information including passwords, which could potentially be used to hack into other accounts, such as email or banking accounts if you use the same password for those. If the site gets hacked in such a way then having a secondary display name won't solve much.

It's difficult for hackers to hack a Steam account, because of Steam Guard. The username being different than the display name prevents others from knowing any information about someone's login information. It helps a lot in preventing social engineering attacks.
Typed from a cell-phone.

That might or might not be a good idea. In my opinion, if it is kinda tricky to hack into a passowrd, imagine how hard it is to crack two!

Some people are able to crack a password through the use of a bot, and social engineering. Chess.com is living in the past, where the username is the display name. Chess.com is the only company that I know of that still has the username as the display name today. Every other company has already changed that. because of security measures.
Stop living in the past Chess.com developers. Or maybe, Chess.com doesn't have enough skilled programmers to update their website, because their too busy hiring Grandmasters instead of more programmers.

Agree with op. Paying customers should be worried. A long time ago the site would send passwords in the clear via email - this has changed. Always good to improve.

how do I change my user name
Settings > Profile and click the Change link next to your username.

Why is the username the display name? People know the username we use to login.
The developers of Chess.com should send everyone a message to everyone that will allow us to change our username to something else, and allow us to choose a new display name. This will make sure it's more difficult for people to hack people's account.
Clearly the developers of Chess.com doesn't pay attention to how other websites both have the display name and username to be different.
I suggest looking at Steam to get an idea of how login details and display names should work. They should also implement an extra security measure similar to Steam Guard. How well does Steam Guard work? The owner of Steam, Gabe Newell, gave out his Steam login details (both password and username) to the public. Nobody has been able to login into his account except for himself.
