as a 900 it will take an infinite amount of time.

but if you keep improving your rating, you will make grandmaster.

if you improve by 10 rating points per year, then that would be over 170 years.

Ummm….do nothing besides play chess….imo being a GM or whatever isn’t some remarkable genius status or something. If you focus on nothing but chess and become extremely unsocial…you’ll get there. The question is…do you really want to waste your time on earth living that way. 🤷🏽‍♂️. I think the impression that some players get when they see GM’s and the publicity around tournaments and all that is extremely misleading…these dudes have literally spent a good part of their life staring at a board game and they were in a position to do so.

It's very difficult to become a GM. Find out where your plateau is then decide if it's feasible. I'm pretty good at chess but I know I'll never be a GM. It's best to be excellent at a lot of things rather than really good at one thing anyway in my opinion.

Personally I would not even try, an example of how hard it is and the rags to no riches road, take a look at our British hopes who made it such as Mark Hebden, Keith Arkell, to name just a couple spending 35+ years round the Grand Prix Tournament circuit up and down the country of the UK in and out of grubby Guest houses travelling by train to and from tournaments and fighting for a first prize fund of £500-£700. Max and yes getting eventually to qualify for that G.M Title by gaining the required 3 Norms and maintaining that 2500+ required rating. (There are easier ways to earn a better living, become an accountant, or solicitor) instead of travelling up and down the country earning peanuts …. Unless your specially gifted i.e.., hitting 2700 rating by the time your 25? and even then your not guaranteed to be invited to those big bucks events?!

Paul Morphy once said something to this effect: “Knowing how to play chess is the mark of a good education. Knowing how to play chess well is the mark of a wasted youth.”

if you want to become one of the top 2,000 chessplayers in the world, one will have to set aside many other things in life. Same if you want to become one of the best golfers, pool players, model railroad collectors, or anything else.

NM is a pretty decent compromise mate, and a hell of an achievement

Play nothing but speed chess. Memorize openings. Youll be a GM in 3 months.

Horrible advice since someone might try that and realize it just gets them to gain a hundred elo and thats it.

It takes natural talent plus hard work - many dont have the natural talent.

Do you analyse your games?

OP: Did you ever play over the board classical game? Do you even know what does it mean?
