1. First of all I agree with Nigel Short that we should remove all titles. ELO ratings are sufficient to show a person's strength.
2. Secondly if at all titles are all that important, I think that titles shouldn't be permanent. For example for a GM if his rating drops below 2300, then his title will automatically be removed and he must go through all the requirements again to get his title back. So similarly for an IM if his rating drops below 2200.
3. Titles must not be given out during age group or special one off events etc. All titles must be earned with no exception.
