Too much chess

Lately I've been playing increasingly more chess. I'm slowly improving my game, with ups and downs. But as of lately I've been making many uneccesary blunders. I figured I am playing too many games and too many at a time as well. I can't concentrate as well even if I try to.

Since I am playing 22 games at the moment, my rating would drop severely if I resigned on each game. (not that I'm a rating person but it's nice to have an accurate rating to play equal opponents). Also, Id hate to throw away interesting ongoing games, for me but also for my opponents. So I guess I'll just finish my games. But I'm interested whether someone encountered this problem too, or if anyone has another perspective.

Maybe after you finish all your game, don't play anymore and study about chess and concetrate on it, and then you'll see that it will be more easy for you too play and concetrate on the games.

Oh yes, I've been there before!  In fact, I am currently recovering from a staggering chess load that reached just under 30 games (to put that number in perspective, I consider 12 or more active games too many to control).  Like you, I have blundered much more often as a result.  And silly blunders too, such as leaving a piece en prise for no apparent reason.  It's chess burn-out, plain and simple.

What I try to do is make sure I have long time controls in all my games -  at least 7 days per move.  That way, if I get swamped, I still have enough time to space the games out over the course of a week and not have to worry about losing on time.

Yup.  I try to keep my number of games between five and ten.  If I get 15 or more, it starts to seem like a chore and I like to enjoy chess in other ways too: studying books, doing tactical problems, playing OTB against my hand-held chess 'puter or a real live human being.  I think that the variety really helps.

finish all your games and play live

bastiaan, i know what you mean, i've been losing too many games lately (although they are against higher opposition i feel im not not playing well) too. i took a break a couple months ago and that really helped

A year ago I had more than 80 games going at several sites. Way too much!!! I'm down to 30 games now and I think that's still too many. But I've encountered people who maintain 100 or more games continuously. I don't know how they do it. I think 20 or fewer is good. Maybe a dozen or so. Another factor is the time control. Most of my games are 5 to 10 days per move. That relieves a lot of the pressure. I like to take my time and I'm lousy OTB. I enjoy studying chess as much as playing so I want to reduce my game load so I can spend more time studying. I win about 65%.

Yes, live chess, especially with long time control help you to improve. Play at least G30 + 15sec games. Make it very similar to a chess tournament.

The best way to play online chess is to actually copy moves from your screen into the real chess board, think over the real chess board and only after that copy moves back into online game.

I hope that helps. Wink

PS If you have problems with concentration just stop playing chess for some time like 1-2 days and it'll get better.

I don't mind playing a lot of games. I do catch myself not thinking through a move when there are a lot of games ready for me to move. Blunders happen to me whether I play 20 games or 2. I don't see my rating drop when I just finish a tournament playing like 10 games simultaniously though. On the contrary, I got 9.5/10 in a tournament's first round!

I think you should just play the games simultaniously, scroll back a few moves every new one and then see what your options are per game. This way you also recognize traps you were trying to set. I often go back like 5 moves, to see what I played and then check out what move seems best.

Hope this helps!

Similar, I am currently playing up to 100 games at several sites (never more than 25 games at any one site). Too many I suppose, but I think I manage them reasonably well. I try and approach the games in small groups maybe concentrating on 10 or 20 games then rotating (but not neglecting any for prolonged periods). I prefer to play 3 days a move and never (or rather rarely time out). I'm happy with my current gameload of about 80 games, but I supect if I dropped half I might be able to add 100 points or more to my rating.

As Decoy321 I often scroll back 3 or 4 moves to refresh myself on  a game if I haven't written any notes.

Ik denk niet dat je per sé live hoeft te spelen.
Je zou ook gewoon 2 partijen tegelijk kunnen spelen

Veel plezier nog!

yeah i have like 50 but i lost most of them

I think that live chess is the best, but since my computer cannot remain connected to the server,I play turn-based for the time being.Whenever I think that I may forget something I write some notes or go back a few moves to remember what I did.

Aristokatt

I have experienced many of the things discussed above. So now I make a few friends on here and rotate around playing them. With most I enjoy the conversation aspect  as much as the game. Time goes by TOO fast. I always play better 1 game at a time with a real set. It would be great to travel around and play my friends in person.

Then maybe I wouldn't get my ass kicked as muchFoot in mouth

bastiaan

Well good to se there's other people recognizing this,  live chess is a good option yes, but I also enjoy turn based chess so I'l do a bit of both.

@ aristokatt: yeah playing friends is the best I agree.

BruiserMac

I play lots of games simultaneously and my rating probably suffers for it, but I love the game !!  Cool

chessmaster102

I thought I had long gotten rid of that problem but I noticed that I'm going thru it still even now when my rating (OTB) is in the high 1700s

Take in-depth written notes on each game in progress (pages and pages of them!).  Play no more than 5 games at once.  You'll get much more out of it.
